Councillors approve former Old Kilpatrick drink driver for taxi licenceCOUNCILLORS have approved a man with a drink driving and speeding convictions worthy of becoming a taxi driver.
Degree student Shaun Ennis defended his raft of offences at the licensing committee of West Dunbartonshire Council on Wednesday, February 24.
Members heard the former oil and gas worker had a drink driving offence after he was caught driving over the limit in August 2001.
With six penalty points, the Old Kilpatrick driver had also been convicted of speeding twice during 2014 with two fines of £120 and £150.
The father-of-two was also fined for shouting and swearing in the street in Old Kilpatrick before "lashing out" at police after a warning.
Mr Ennis told how he recently lost his job working around the world in the oil and gas industry, which he had held from 2006.
Now he and his wife are doing degrees and working he is looking to become a driver to earn extra cash to support his two children.
Mr Ennis told the committee: "There's no excuse for what I have done, it's been really daft and stupid of me. When I worked in Africa, you would often just follow the traffic on the road. Driving down the road after being away working, there's nothing worse than not seeing your children for weeks — the speeding was seriously accidental."
Provost Douglas McAllister pointed out the seriousness of the wannabe taxi driver having six penalty points.
However, Councillor Lawrence O'Neill moved that Mr Ennis should be granted a temporary licence and it was unanimously agreed by the committee.
