Taxi fares freeze planned

Taxi fares in Allerdale look set to be frozen for the sixth year in a row.

Allerdale council will vote on Wednesday to set hackney carriage fares to be charged in the borough from April.

The authority's licensing committee has recommended that they are kept at the current rates and reviewed in a year.

It said increasing the charges by the current rate of inflation would add about 3p to the fee for the first mile or part mile.

This minimal increase would result in the borough's 147 hackney carriages needing their meters recalibrated, at a cost of about £20 per meter.

The committee said there seemed to be little appetite among taxi drivers for an increase.

It added that fuel prices had reduced in recent months and the fees for vehicle tests and licences remained unchanged.

Hackney carriage fares in Allerdale were last increased in 2010, when the price for the first mile rose from £2.60 to £2.90 and the price for each subsequent fifth of a mile went up from 36p to 39p.

Additions were also then made to the charges relating to public holidays.
