I currently have a job that pays 250 per week cash for 25 hours Monday to Friday mornings.

My car should be plated and ready for P/H by the end of the month.

I'm in two minds whether to keep my current job and only do private hire on nights/weekends or do private hire full time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you live in London - yes...if you live in the outer Hebrides probably not!

You need to provide more info i.e neck of the woods, Ph or Hackney, if PH would you pay a full weeks money to the office Or do they allow you to pay by the shift etc.

Hi, i would be doing P/H in a large town just outside Edinburgh, radio rent is 90 per week. I've done a few shifts on a split bag and averaged around 200 takings on a Saturday night. 150 on A Friday/Sunday.

Its the mid week shifts that are the unknown, i know my current job would pay for most of my outgoings leaving what i make during weekends/ nights for me.

Have I got this right? You are going to work 25 hours in one job just to pay the costs of working in another job. How much do you expect to earn from PH and how many hours do you expect to work?

I'm expecting to work 25 hours in my current job and 30 hours doing PH, that should leave me with around 450 per week for a total of 55 hours.

Or would i be better putting the 55 hours solely into PH?

£250 for 25 hours is £10 per hour. Then £200 for 30 hours is £6.67 per hour.

I realise that i will be working for less per hour but it still averages at £8.18 per hour between the two jobs.

If more hours were available in my current job i would take them but unfortunately there isn't & i need something flexible to top my income up.

Tbh I would not use that as a guide line as most offices feed themselves first - you could end up with a lot less than that as a take....with that office!

I worked part time for 2 years, fri and sat night are a given and then a week night of my choosing. It worked for me as i got lucky and bought a reliable plated car for cheap. Part time worked well at first, however it took me the weeknight and friday to earn enough to cover my costs. Saturday nights takings were usually profit, if it was busy, which it was more often than not.

The firm i worked for then took on a load of drivers without the extra work, and it became harder to make decent money. Sometimes id just about cover my costs half way through the sat shift, meaning hardly any profit.

2 years of ph took its toll on the car, and it ended up costing money most months in repairs so i got rid and went back to driving on a half bag basis.

If you work full time AND do taxis/ph on weekends, you WILL be permanently tired and have no social life. Also you will be driving tired (get up at 6am fri and go to bed 5am sat) which is a big safety risk.

I haven't been using as office car, I've been doing a 50/50 split with another owner/driver.

I realise its not ideal but i wont be working full time, its 25 hours per week and I'll be finished by 12 pm each day through the week (Plenty of time to get a kip before my Friday PH shift).

So you get paid cash from your main job, and you expect to get cash from your p/h job, do you have any intention of declaring any of that to HMRC? Remember they just love sites like this.

It still begs the question, why work more hours/days just to pay the expenses of doing the job? I've recently found that by doing part-time bus driving, it pays far better than p/h in my neck of the woods. If I work late shift weekends, 2 lots of 11 hours, then 4 x 4 hour evenings, I'm worse off than just doing 1 weekend shaft and 4 evenings, the rest goes in tax (PAYE). Very often less is more.
