This is either a very old joke or factually incorrect. because an 83 year old would have only been 11 or 12 in 1944.

dad never had a passport but visited Libya, Egypt, Italy, Greece, France......all for free

he lost a big towed generator that was behind his truck, it slid in a ditch, he went and got another, this was before Monte Cassino
