German Chancellor Angela Merkel said her party had a "difficult day" after right-wingers made gains in state elections.
The anti-immigrant AfD party had campaigned against what it called Mrs Merkel's "catastrophic" decision to accept a million migrants and refugees.
However, a German government spokesman said the country's immigration policy would not change.
The chancellor said a European solution was needed for the crisis.
"The fact is that in the eyes of the people no appropriate and satisfactory solution has yet been found and this had a very great impact on the vote," she said.
Germany and other countries have reinstated some border controls in response to the flow of migrants.

She set us on the road to cheap labour and would have bitten your hand off to 1. Gain access to a foreign cheap wages labour market in this country 2. A chance to once and for all time, to make Trade Unions redundant.

I remember the images of a Columbian open cast mine that made the "Mad Max " film in the Australian outback seem like holiday camp - they were horrendous working conditions ! Did she bat an eyelid - nope..........the coal was so cheap, their lives did not matter - neither do ours to THEM.

We in the Coal industry were doomed due to lack of support from the populace at the time,and warned it was the forerunner of things to come -loss of shipbuilding,steel works,Engineering companies,rise in unemployment.The country has not still recovered from the demise of the Coal industry.

And yes I worked in a coal mine,sometimes on coal faces as low as 18 inches but one thing that came out of the mine every day was we stick together and support each other and I still try to do this to the best of my ability unlike some in this trade.

Pity Scargill was in charge of the NUM then

As much as Scargill was off the wall on his government rant, he was correct on the amount of pits that were going to be closed, and not the amount that Thatcher and MacGregor lied about/claimed. In fairness the dispute lost its way as it became more personal between him and Thatcher - the pits were going to be closed in any event. If you look at the closure of industry in general under the guise of " We must maximise profit - so it must go abroad", then you will see that it is true that the companies have done well, however the population is at rock bottom. Hence the rich/poor divide getting bigger and bigger.

The Iron rust bucket started the decline of this once thriving nation.

It never opened did it? When I went down Asfordby the first thing I said was, "this will never run."
