Why am I biased? I don't fear UBER in my tiny little town when there are many, many major cities that they would choose before coming here. We are already putting things in place to make our business as sustainable as we can. UBER rely on owner drivers of private hire cars. There are only a couple of them in our town. There are a couple of bases that have the odd private hire car and the rest are Hackney. Now if UBER decide to come here and they will accept Hackney vehicles then our own vehicles could be used by our drivers if they wish because they pay us for the miles that they drive the vehicle and not for the work they do. We don't take a percentage of their money so it doersn't realy matter to us if they are doing our work, their own work or UBERS work. Many of them already do work for some of the other bases in the town.

Not at all. Personally I do not like the way they treat drivers and customers at all but that is not my problem.

from what I read only Reading has so far blocked Uber (on questionable grounds liable to go to appeal) so its a bit like holding back a tsunami, besides which drivers and customers arent goods+chattels and can, as they say, "walk"...

How does surge pricing with a hackney plate work????

the issue of meters and fares is the only sticking point, maybe if uber had T1 and T2 (or as per each LA) and only gave ESTIMATES with a feedback per trip to finalise the cost it could work

book a car/cab....A to B.....estimate is £60..........meter fare is £65, drivers uses the app back to uber, uber takes the money

im sure theres a way

or uber customers could have a charge card and pay in the taxi

Uber's surge pricing is 99% based on a shortage of Ubers, it's bound to coincide with times of demand but it should be made illegal to surge prices based on a companies own demand/shortage of working vehicles.

Best way to deal with Uber is simply to up your game, invest in tech and provide a higher level of reliability with a good friendly service, that's how we up here are doing it.

Very true.

We have an app.

Just like Uber.

We take card payments.

Just like Uber.

Additionally, we have phones. You can CALL the office and speak to a human being to book a cab or complain.

Additionally, we take cash.

Additionally, you can see, in front of you, how much your 'ride' has cost you at any particular moment during the journey.

But, we have cabs, or taxis, and customers. We don't have 'rides' and 'riders!' Urgghh, those are disgusting words to use!

Being part of an active co-operative keeps me happy, luckily in Edinburgh we have two, one though goes down the extreme discount route ([edited by admin] of drivers/owners) and the other one who invest's in the latest tech trends, giving customers more value for money is the way ahead.
