"I know that taxi driving won't be easy"

   well its not rocket science
ok mate? where you off to ?
that will be £5.60, see ya

my opinion?, well its a chit job done mainly by people who cant do anything else ( mostly obese chaps that manual work would finish off!) , also people ( like myself) who are forced back in to it through circumstances,
, its easy money & once you get your badge/car sorted you can fall back on it if anything happens, me personally, in your situation, well i wouldn't do it , i don't know your other circumstances though except the ones you posted ( sick of current job basically because you have to work under others who don't seem to have a clue on how to run a company!! who cares ? you get a wage & its not your company ?? ) anyway , i do hope you enjoy it , get a school run ( its guaranteed cash at the end of the month , drives me mental when other drivers say this mind, " too tying mate, i always reply, no , tying is working 9-5 , 5 days a week, not 90 mins twice a day  ) good luck mate , hope it works out for ya

Cheers mate. The more I see the replies on here the more I'm thinking I have made a big mistake ha. I've got my knowledge test in a couple of weeks and need to do the dsa driving test too so hopefully all being well I can be up and running by the end of the month.

Anyone have the answers to my other questions?:

As a private hire driver, if I wished to take my own bookings from friends/family would it be as simple as paying for an operators licence to run alongside my private hire licence or would I have to pay for additional insurances etc.? What is involved? Is it easy to do? What would I do with regards to a meter/charges etc.? Would I need to record every journey undertaken? I have a large network of friends in my town and being in my 20s a lot of them in my age group like to party most weekends so I would hope just from advertising on social network sites I would get a fair few bookings. Obviously it would be best if I could get a few drivers on board with me as it grows but I guess I could build this up over time. Do people think that it would be a good idea from the outset to start up myself from home as a one-man band? Obviously I would have to advise friends/family to book in advance where possible otherwise they would give up and go elsewhere if I was never available.

Regarding earnings working for a taxi company how does it usually work? Do you bank your own earnings and then set up a direct debit to pay your settle etc.?

Finally your accounts...do you lot tend to do your own or employ somebody else? I have found a couple of online templates which are fairly cheap and therefore I am considering trying one of them.

Cheers
Col

Slow down a bit. Don't go thinking of expansion even before you have started.
If you want to accept bookings yourself from friends etc. You will need your own operators license. Be very careful of your friends, do not fall into the trap of offering them a discount because they will "use" you. Keep work and social life separate, you are running a business.

Grandads spot on, Mates rates can be ruinous to you and if they won't pay the going rate to you where as they would pay it to someone else than they are little more than fair weather friends and not real mates. Do not under sell or under value yourself, you have to make a profit and that's hard enough as a newbie.

i know that, but is it worth buying a op licence on ph ? might as well have just bought a hack & worked the office? best of both worlds for him then, could get work from the office through the day & hack on a weekend on the "hack rates" & get his own customer base, just get some cards printed off, i looked in to this when i bought my car, now i don't think i would ever buy a ph car again, i would just buy a hack even if i wanted to work a office

1. he may be in a restricted area
2. our PH ops licence is only £70, the PH plate is £70 less than the hack plate......go figure
3. he may live in the sticks with no town work or ranks
