Daniel Bibby from Harlow sentenced to 30 months after assaulting taxi driver in North Weald

A man who assaulted a taxi driver at the end of a journey, leaving him with serious facial injuries, has been sent to a young offenders’ institute.

Daniel Bibby, 18, received a 30 month sentence after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding over the incident in North Weald High Road on March 19.

The driver in his late 60s required hospital treatment after he was assaulted by Bibby before he left the taxi.

Bibby, of Playhouse Square in Harlow, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court last Wednesday (May 4).

Two ‘youths’ were arrested and have been released on bail pending further enquiries until June 2.

North Weald taxi driver, 69, slams bottle attacker's sentence







A 69-year-old taxi driver from North Weald who needed 80 stitches in his head after being glassed with a bottle has slammed his attacker's sentence.

Barry Winstone was left with scarring after he was whacked with a beer bottle on the back of his head and in the face by Daniel Bibby in Queens Street, North Weald, on March 19.

Bibby, 18, of Playhouse Square in Harlow, was jailed for 30 months at Chelmsford Crown Court last week after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding.

Mr Winstone, who retired from full-time work five years ago but drives a taxi part-time, described Bibby's jail term as "lenient".

He said: "With good behaviour he will be out in just over a year.

"These courts need sorting out.

Mr Winstone, who lives in Vicarage Lane, recalled picking up three young men from the office of Elite Cars in Epping at midnight.

He said: "They said they were going to new estate in North Weald.

"I told them there is no new estate in North Weald, you must mean Blenheim Square, and asked them to pay up before and they paid me £9.

"I stopped outside Blenheim Square and they said 'this isn't it, it must be further on.'

"The next block is on the corner of Queens Road so I took them there and I said 'this one might be it' but they said it was further on.

"I said 'boys, I don't think you know where you are going, I think you better get out' with my back to them, facing the steering wheel.

"That's when I got the bottle in the back of the head.

"I turned round to try to stop him and got a couple (of blows) in the face so I got out and ran across the road.

"I was knocking on doors trying to get help. People started stopping in their cars and they (the three boys) ran off. The other two didn't do anything but they could have stopped him, so they are to blame as well."

Mr Winstone sustained deep cuts above his nose and to his eyebrow, as well as bruising and scarring, and visited hospital four times following the attack. He said his injuries are healing well.

Mr Winstone took three weeks off work and lost up to £1,200 in income but said the attack had not stopped him from wanting to get back in his cab.

"I enjoy it, I like talking to people," he added.

"I've been back to work for a month now and so many people said what a tragedy it was and what he (Bibby) got was ridiculous."

Mr Winstone said he was disappointed a charge of wounding with intent, which was denied by Bibby, was left to lie on file.

At Bibby's sentencing, prosecutor Geoff Belgart told the court how the glass bottle used to attack Mr Winstone came from a crate of beer.

He said when Mr Winstone fled the taxi, Bibby also got out with a bottle of Stella Artois in each hand and threw them at him, although neither caused further injury.

Bibby fled but was arrested later after the other two teenagers identified him.

Defending Bibby, Sumeer Choudhury said he "expresses his deep regret and apologises and accepts full responsibility for the injuries that were caused in the taxi."

He said: "He had drunk throughout the evening and bought a crate of beer to move to another location.

"One of the others said 'hit him' and he did.

"A student at Harlow College at the time, he was doing a course to help him join the armed forces and still hopes to.

"He suffers depression and has been at a statemented school."

shouldn't have happened mind & i hope the fooker gets a right shoeing inside, but 69 year old & still working? ffs , the bloke should be putting his feet up not taking money out of the younger generation who have kids to feed, mortgages to pay etc, i hate these greedy old fookers me tbh & wtf was he letting someone in his car with a bottle of beer ffs ?? edit, just seen it was a "crate"

Why should he not be driving at 69yrs. of age,at least this guy takes his profession seriously unlike yourself who from what you broadcast one would have doubts as to you being in the "Fit and proper person" bracket,

Just for your information I am a Professional Taxi proprietor/driver who also happens to be 69yrs. of age.

just my opinion mate, if at the age of 69 & you still need to work, well imho you have planned your life ( financially) poor, or you are just purely greedy , like i said just my opinion, but if you feel ok taking money off the young ones who have bills to pay, crack on mate, put ya feet up & call it a day ffs , so what is it then? need ( you are 69 & didn't plan for retirement?, of greed ? think i know )
