Scientists in Britain could lose millions of pounds in research funds if the nation leaves the European Union, according to a cross-party group of peers.

In the latest intervention in the Brexit debate, the Lords science committee warns that substantial EU research funds now flowing into the UK were not likely to be covered by future governments if Britain left the union.

The UK contributed nearly £4.3bn for EU research projects from 2007 to 2013, but received nearly £7bn back over the same period, the committee states in a report published on Wednesday. The £2.7bn excess was equivalent to more than £300m in research funds a year.

we have a very proud history and a great standing in the academic world it would be a shame to destroy all that by spinning the roulette wheel of fate by voting leave

Because we will be able to vote in a government that decides how to spend all the money we spend.

Thus all the money we send to EU, for them to decide how we spend some of it, will be kept and spent on what we want.

How do you think science was funded before 1972?

The scientists may just move to the other EU countries instead.

To be honest as long a scientist finds a cure for cancer, or better cures for existing ailments/diseases, i don't really care where they do it.

Even Europe.

A load of Bull, the biggest European Science project is the Large Hadron Collider run by CERN and that has nothing to with the EU, it's paid for by the Members of CERN and they are Austria Belgium Bulgaria Czech Republic Denmark Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Israel Italy Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Slovakia Spain Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom Associate members: Cyprus Pakistan Serbia Turkey.

An Inconvenient fact to all you Bremainers that Europes largest Science project is Fech all to do with the EU at all.

Proof that Science will and can go on without the EU.

Much of the science in this country is funded by the EU though. If that funding goes elsewhere, the projects may also go elsewhere and the scientists will probably follow the funding and the projects.

a healthy scientific sector attracts quality university students and high tech businesses with lots of well paid workers who use taxis and lots of struggling students who also use taxis if we lose the science sector we could lose one of the most important sectors of our economy high tech manufacturing which brings in export earnings and plenty of paye tax to pay for NHS spending, schools etc

If the vote is to leave the EU we will still have to pay in until such time as our exit is negotiated. In the meantime how much funding do you think the EU will send here for projects that are likely to continue beyond the exit? Where will the money come from if we need to fund these projects whilst still having to pay in to the EU?

Why don't you ask the Government why they're keeping the cure for cancer under wraps? Maybe it's got something to do with the bonds the Government have with the Pharma companies.
