My car is on variable servicing and is indicating I'll need two services per year if covering around 30k miles per year.

Can't help thinking this isn't enough.

If it's what the manufacturers reccomend then it's plenty, nowt to stop you doing an oil and filter change in between services if it make you happier, but i find no gain in doing so as modern engine oils are far better than they used to be.

I never did this primarily due to (now cost), as opposed to the engine being pristine in 10/15 years time......two guys that I know drop their oil every 3000 miles! The one is just a domestic driver who said that his engine was taken apart after many miles, (I don't know why), and it looked like brand new inside. The other is a taxi driver who swears that his engine is as quiet as the first day he bought it, and the fuel return is still good. I would say that it makes sense to do it say every 5/6000 miles + filter and a full service around 12 K .

Not disputing the above information ! I had a top of the range Volvo back some years ago SE 80 2.4d, a smashing car all round, they said that the (automatic) gear box oil never needed changing! Some years later, clunk, clunk came along, this happening when the gears were going through changes. When the oil was drained out it came out in sheets/film. Personally I would not leave the above that long as the oil will lose its viscosity/breakdown, it is in their interest for it to happen - I would not trust any of them.

I follow the manufacturer's guidelines.

My previous cars have been 12,000, but my new super clean diesel is now 18,000.

Which surprised the dealer, but it's in the book.

I always went by manufacturers recommendation on routine servicing, but had an intermediate safety check by the local garage about 4 times a year; that would throw up odd things like worn out brakes, worn tyres and the like, things that drivers are inclined to ignore and get a stop for on a spot check.

just been told by Ford that my Tourneo is not due oil and filter till 30000 miles but other cars generally done at 10000 intervals because in this game it's surprising what else you don't spot (bushes ball joints etc) so that generally ensures cars are road worthy

My point entirely. This is why PSVs have to undergo regular safety checks, not just at "oil and filter" service intervals, and why I get my cars regularly safety-checked.
