Our byelaws state we can charge £5 or the fare from the main police station, whichever is greater, to return lost property.
Punters don't think they should pay though (if I've only got round the corner or I'm nearby I don't charge). Did a job, 7'ish miles out of town, so 14 mile round trip, few hours later gets the call 'have you found a phone?'. Next day goes round to drop it off and asks for a tenner (if I'd stuck to the byelaws it would have been over £20), refuses to pay and calls me all sorts of names. No problem, I'll drop it off at the police station *sometime* and you can collect it from there. I waited a week before handing it in, wonder how many trips they made ?
