To become Private Hire Driver I have to pass DSA driving test. I`m not sure what DSA means by saying "The assessment will include: around 10 minutes of driving without being given turn-by-turn directions by the examiner". Does it mean that I need to know the town where I will be having my DSA driving test? Does it mean that I will receive instruction like: "get from point A to point B by choosing my own way"? If it`s true then the only place I can take the test is my town as it is the only town I know good enough. If it`s not true then I can take test anywhere.

I`m asking this question as I have to wait 6 weeks for test in my town, but if I choose different town 40 miles away then I have to wait only 2 weeks.

All help appreciated

Regards.

Simon.

No its like the good old driving Test with a twist the examiner will give you directions and assume your dropping passengers off Take care at the end the examiner will have highway code questions and usally Traffic light sequence.

Most driving schools do a Taxi Test Pre assessment Good Luck.

That made no difference whatsoever down here - I had to sit my driving test all over again, as does every Cardiff driver.

So it means that I can take my test in other town and do not have to know that town, just follow highway code and good L-plate style driving. Thanks to that I`ll be able to cut waiting time from 6 to 2-3 weeks. I just wasn`t sure what DSA means by saying "The assessment will include: around 10 minutes of driving without being given turn-by-turn directions by the examiner". Now I know, thank you for all help!

The assessment will be on your driving, similar to you original driving test i.e. not a test of knowledge but a test of your driving ability.

Thank you so much for all replies. And just one more question: do I have to pass DSA theory exam before my DSA practical driving test? As far as I know I do not have to in town I`ll be driving. But in some towns council require drivers to pass DSA theory + practical... So I just want to double check here.

I think it's just the driving aspect of it and not the theory.

Now I just wonder - is this necessary to every single taxi driver to take DSA practical driving exam?

As far as I know sometimes council does not require DSA practical driving exam from new taxi drivers, but instead council send new drivers for some kind of "Driver Improvement Programme".

Does anybody know anything about it?

The Department for Transport and the DVSA, say that taxi assessments will not be conducted after 31 December. Any bookings made and a slot allocated before that date will go ahead.
