The reason they are doing this is £££££££. If they've got 500 taxis and 1,000 private hire it's some ££££ over a year, add in the test fees and boom.

I don't dispute that they are testing them outside your area, but it quite clearly states it has to be within, and your one of the brighter ones on here.


50 Provisions as to proprietors (1) Without prejudice to the provisions of section 68 of this Act, the proprietor of any hackney carriage or of any private hire vehicle licensed by a district council shall present such hackney carriage or private hire vehicle for inspection and testing by or on behalf of the council within such period and at such place WITHIN the area of the council as they may by notice reasonably require:

I think your correct, but I think it should be put out to tender? They also have to advertise any increase as its part of your licensing fee, even if you pay it separately.

If all Councils examined vehicles in house, issued C.o.C. and used these to license accordingly it would reduce fees.

I take that to be an ad hoc check or inspection, not a check for mechanical fitness for re-license.
