Taxi Driver Online

I had a phone call today from someone at Unite asking me if we were interested in being their preferred provider of Taxis in our area. They told me about how many members they have in the area and asked if we would give them a discount if they showed their union card. I would get a link on their website as well. However there would be a charge for being their preferred supplier(they wouldn't tell me over the phone how much). So not only do they want our drivers to give their members a discount, they want us to pay for the privilege of giving the discount.
I can't believe that I turned down such a wonderful offer.

We pay pubs/hotels for the privilege of putting a free phone in their premises. In return we get to do all their staff at T1 on a docket at T2 times or 20% discount if it's at T1 time ! The majority of the work is only staff jobs who live within a mile, the number of full fare regular customers is a fraction of the total.

So we pay them and in return get to do some work at a discounted rate, the thinking being that if they're using us they're not using a rival firm.
Never understood it myself

For the amount of £3 staff jobs we get and the handfull of £5 full fare ones we do I'd rather not bother.

One of the places we pay to have a phone is a chinese takeaway, there has NEVER been a customer use it to get home yet the takeaway use us to do their deliveries knowing they get T1 rate

And the driver gets a stinking car.

I'd tell them to knob off.

I think my language would be more fruitful. the only time I ask our drivers to take less that the mtered fare is if the office have messed up. We then pay the driver the difference.

When they give out the "You are a Prefered Provider" spiel, it usually means ( no disrespect) that they have also been turned down elsewhere.

I always thought it meant "we want to take you for a mug." I mean, a union asking workers to take less money than they are already earning. You couldn't make it up.

Very strange get the offer in writing and post it up could provoke absolute havoc for those responsible,

The first qualification for any company being a preferred bidder to a Union is that that company has a recognition agreement with a Union, which somehow Grandad i dont think you have ...............so here we have a Union supposedly trying to do business with a SCAB company........... Heads will roll for sure

The only other motivation is they want contact with your Drivers to recruit them but its a bloody stupid way to do it

They rang again today. I asked them to send me an email with their proposal but they wanted a face to face meeting. I also asked why a Union that fights for better pay and conditions for it's members thought it was ok to ask taxi drivers to work for less money than they were entitled to. I told them that I could not ask my drivers to do that out of principle.
Any of our drivers are quite welcome to join a Union if they wish. I would not stop them even if I could.

I dont think they wanted the drivers to work for a lower rate they wanted YOU reduce the charges because they do not understand the system

As for Drivers joining a Union should you or any proprietor attempt to stop them or penalise them in any way you would render yourself "not fit and proper" and lose your license

And of course no union will ever reveal to an employer or Proprietor that an individual is a Union member without the consent of that member.

I would think that it is NOT Unite the union but probably the dodgy lot from Cambridge or another firm like it who have offered Unite a discounted service and the up front payments will be their commission for arranging it
