That is not what usually happens. When the water is sucked in through the air intake the bores get flooded. The valves close on the compression stroke so there is nowhere for the water to go and because it doesn't compress the con rods usually break and if you are lucky they don't go through the side of the engine. The problem here is that we have become complacent because of our flood defences. Most roads and places that used to flood don't anymore. There are however some places that do still flood and if you don't usually travel those roads you can get caught out.
