A campaign led by medical professionals is calling for all diesel cars to be banned from London.
Doctors Against Diesel claim 9,400 Londoners a year die prematurely from breathing in toxic fumes from diesel engines.
Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have committed to a ban on diesel vehicles by 2025.
Opponents to the campaign have called the proposals "impractical" and warned a blanket ban could "backfire".

Doctors Against Diesel - comprising doctors, nurses and health professionals - are calling for Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, to commit to phasing out diesel vehicles from London.
Mr Khan has already said he wants to get rid of diesel buses by 2018.
A spokesman for the mayor said he has no legal powers to ban cars in London and is calling on the government "to face its responsibility and implement a national diesel scrappage scheme now".
"The mayor has more than doubled air quality funding and is doing everything in his power to tackle London's toxic air and rid the city of the most polluting vehicles, but he cannot do this alone" the spokesman added.

personally i think more can be done on the engineering front to get diesels to burn the fuel better and the fuel companies could produce a much better and cleaner burning fuel but I suspect we are all going to have to drive LPG or electric cars soon

remember in london when i was a kid loads of buses's were electric trolley buses;s reckon their on the way back and Diesel will be gone in llndon within 15 years but then so will I

Well then..Dont walk around the streets, get in a nice Taxi or PH with a Particle filter..you know it makes sense.

and yet.....imagine the carnage if everyone bought a Tesla...

the fuel sales would end......forecourts would close, 1000's would be out of work and HMG would lose billions in fuel duty and VAT


electric motors are far simpler to produce than a petrol/diesel engine, they dont need a casting so no foundry, theres 1000's out of work in the foundry and engine assembly plants

the car industry is not geared up for mass sales of electric vehicles but it could gear up to alternatives such as LPG or LNG with the right investment in developing engines for these fuels instead of adapting engines designed to run on petrol or diesel to other fuels

The biggest global selling car this year is the Toyota Corolla (called the Auris here) with 940,000 sold.
Don't know how many of those were hybrids but the local dealer says the Auris hybrid is their biggest seller. If the problems with charging times and battery range were better I've no doubt that an all electric vehicle would be the worlds best seller.

Basically its a ploy by the governments, into forcing drivers back to petrol, due to the massive losses in revenues, mainly due to diesel vehicles especially cars, being able to get a third or more MPG from every gallon

they dont WANT leccy cars...leccy motors are easy fast builds by GEC and the like...Ford want to make engines, its the biggest cost in a cars build, keep it inhouse, keep the money inhouse...

Stupid public who think every diesel does 70mpg... then find they do 50mpg and diesel costs more at the pump

The UK produces only 48 weeks supply of diesel as the refineries we have were built way before diesel cars got popular (you cant make diesel and petrol from the 1 barrel of oil, its 1 or the other) so we import diesel...
