Taxi driver denies groping woman on Exeter night club trip

A taxi driver allegedly ran his hand up the skirt of a young female passenger as he took her and two friends to a club in Exeter.

Wahib Tameem was tracked down by police after one of the three customers used her mobile phone to snap a picture of his cab as he drove off down Fore Street.

He had agreed a cut price fare to take the group to a village in East Devon and then back to Exeter and the alleged assault happened as they approached the city centre.

Tameem, aged 59, of Mount Pleasant Road, Exeter, denies two offences of sexually assaulting the same woman passenger during the journey on June 18, 2016.

Iraqi-born Tameem was not in the dock at Exeter Crown Court for the start of his trial but Judge Graham Cottle told the jury they should not speculate about his absence or hold it against him.

Mr Brian Fitzherbert, prosecuting, said the young woman passenger contacted the police shortly after being dropped off at the EX4 club at the top of Fore Street.

The three friends were in Exeter and needed to go back to a village near Honiton before returning to the city and agreed a fare of £50 for the round trip.

She alleged he had tried to put his hand up her skirt on two occasions and had tried to force his fingers into her underwear on the first.

He was arrested after police traced his cab from the mobile phone photograph and denied any inappropriate behaviour.

He said the only contact with the passenger came when she tried to change the channel on the radio and he moved his hand across to stop her.

The front seat passenger told the jury:"The first time he touched me it was not for too long, just a couple of seconds. The second time he moved his hand up my skirt and I pushed it away again.

"His hand got to my underwear and he was trying to get his hand underneath it. I pushed it away. It was about five minutes before the end of the journey and he dropped us near the EX4 club.

"We all got out and there was a conversation between the three of us which led to one of the others taking a picture of his registration and us calling the police. I was just shocked by what happened."

Not really. They might have been off their heads or on the phone or asleep.

The aggrieved will give her evidence to the court, and the defendant if he turns up will give his. The jury then will decide who they believe, and if they believe the driver did it beyond reasonable doubt, he will be found guilty. Other evidence that could be put forward in cases, but not necessarily in this case, is bad character and evidence from others as to the demeanor of the aggrieved and the defendant soon after the alleged attack.

Taxi driver who groped young female passenger has fled to Iraq

A taxi driver who fled the country after being accused of groping a young female passenger has been found guilty in his absence.

Wahib Tameen is now being hunted by police but is thought to have flown back to his native Iraq shortly after being accused of sexual assault.

He was found guilty by a jury at Exeter Crown Court after they heard how his victim had been left shocked and upset by his attempt to put his hand inside her knickers.

Tameem was taking a group of party goers from a village near Honiton to a club in the centre of Exeter when he reached across and put his hand up the victim's skirt.

She told her two friends who were in the back seat as soon as they arrived outside the EX4 club in Fore Street and one of them used her phone to take a picture of the taxi's registration.

The assault was carried out on the night of June 18, 2016 and he is believed to have left the country shortly after he appeared at Exeter Crown Court on July 22 and pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault.

Police are still investigating at least one completely similar complaint from a female passenger which came to light after the July hearing.

Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, confirmed that a warrant for his arrest is in place and adjourned sentence until the New Year.

After they reached their majority verdict, he told the jury:"This has been an unusual trial. I can now tell you why the defendant is not here. He has disappeared and no-one knows where he is."

Tameem, who worked as a taxi driver in Exeter for 35 years, will be interviewed about the new allegations when and if he is traced and arrested.

Tameem, aged 59, of Mount Pleasant Road, Exeter, denied two offences of sexually assault. He was found guilty of one count and the jury were unable to agree on a second.

He was not represented at the trial because he left the country before he had given signed instructions to his legal team, so they did not know what his defence would have been.

During a two day trial in his absence the jury heard how three friends were in Exeter but wanted to go back to a village near Honiton before returning to the city and agreed a fare of £50 for the round trip.

I think this is the second foreign cab driver who has fled prior to conviction in as many months.
