ERM... The driver.
The pedestrian is in hospital with life changing injuries.
The police have inspected our vehicle and released it back to us, there were no faults found. The driver is not suspected of any offense and is being treated as a material witness by the police. He is rather shuck up though. The victim's father used to be one of our drivers until a couple of years ago.

not a nice thing to happen I take it the pedestrian was heavily inebriated at the time

The police will not speculate on this. We will need to wait for the report. It could have been medical or even the victim of a mugging. We don't know.

Yes, I have told him to take his time and let me know when he is ready to come back.

It happens as I've mentioned before the son of a local Cabbie got run over and killed in the early hours of Christmas morning by another Cabbie nobody ever got over that but the driver was back at work within a week because the worst thing you can do is dwell on it as hard as it is the best thing to do is get back behind the wheel to get your confidence back

And as I have mentioned before a colleague down here ran over a drunk who was trying to get a cab by laying flat on the road.

He never got up.

I can't believe the rumour mill regarding this incident. You would think that some other taxi drivers would at least get the right driver but no. One of them is going around telling anyone who asks or anyone who will listen that it is a totally different driver. Still at least that is keeping the pressure off the poor driver that was involved.
The police took all of 15 minutes to inspect our vehicle and returned it to us with no faults found. The only damage was a small piece of plastic trim under the front bumper had been knocked off.
There have still been no details released regarding why the injured person was lying down in the road. As far as we are aware he has sustained 8 broken ribs, which were operated on yesterday, A partially severed ear which has been sewed back, a badly damaged eye socked and either fluid or bleeding on the brain. He is being kept in an induced coma at the moment.

Further update. A person has come forward and told the police that they saw the chap 25 minutes earlier leaving the town center. They know the chap and have made a statement to the police saying that in all the time they have known him they have never seen him as drunk as he was on Saturday night/Sunday morning. They said that he was all over the place and in their opinion he was never going to be able to walk on the footpath.

So why did they not report it to the police, they would have known his route home and been able to make sure he got home safe?

You are having a laugh. Since when have the police made sure that every drunk gets home safe? If they were to do that they would not be able to do anything else at all.
Personally I think the local Council need to take some of the blame. They have cut back on licensing enforcement to such an extent that there is none at all. So pubs are serving people who are already drunk with even more alcohol and getting away with it because of the lack of enforcement.
We have one part time person who works 25.5 hours a week and she is in charge of all licensing functions throughout the Borough. She issues all licenses and does all the checks and all the enforcement. It simply can't be done in the hours.
