once again had a chitload of school runs emailed to me that are up for tender ( think they start after the hols), now, some years ago i owned my own torrent sites, also owned one with a mate that was split between torrents/news groups & steam for the gamers & kvcd , modded/admined quite a few forums also built a pc`s for my sister & mates, was forever upgrading /formatting & fresh installing mates laptops/desktops, so as anyone would agree pretty much computer savvy tbh, now i bought a hack last year so i could get my own run ,the idea was , own run & just work mon-fri, if the kids were on holiday just work the weekend yes that's a fooking YEAR ago!! can i fook navigate the website , its complicated as anything , i have spoken to fellow drivers about this , 1 with a 7 seater just gave up & is contracting, couldn't work the site either, another got his own but his mates lass done it for him , she worked at ibm in IT , & she even found it complicated, this is fooking stupid its unnecessarily complicated, i even phoned them up once just to verify that my settings were correct & i would only get the school runs in my area, the bloke said he had changed my settings & i would only get that work, so what happened?, i was getting invited to tender for road works in the isle of man ffs, i am going to come in on Monday morning after my school run ( contracted), sit here, phone the fookers up, big mug off coffee & 20 cigs & not moving until i learn how to tender for a run , its infuriating

also what sort of prices do you lads put in per mile ? here it works out about £3 pm + £8 quid for the escort ew so for example :
13 mile run = 26 miles per day X £3 +£78 for driver then £16 for escort
so £78x3+£16 per day = £94
£94 x 5= £470 pw, x 4 =£1, 880 pm , that would do me fine thb

Whatever rate you charge you have got to take into account the cost of being tied down (no not that !!!).

In other words don't go in cheap, and then have to turn down more lucrative work.

School times are generally busy anyway.

not long back county would send tenders out to all contractors via bulk email in msoft word format, wherever i was i could get them up on my phone and by the time i got home id have an idea what was going on........

NOW.....all tenders go out via some "portal" that you cant access by mobile phone, it takes 20 minutes to download/decipher WTF is going on and they dont know exactly how it works, i assume its a paid for outsourced service

This is the same county who are introducing ID badges for drivers, escorts and base ops, needing new DBS+updates and CSE courses THEY run.....its almost 2 years since they started this process and no badges have been issued

https://supplierlive.proactisp2p.com/Account/Login

on the upside theyve been so totally occupied doing this that they havent done any compliance checks at schools

cant wait to see how they will monitor these new badges....especially the base ops

I had 2 cars travelling the same route to the same school each with 1 kid in

I suggested merging the runs (saving county £85/week, but making me more) in October

1st reply......"we would love to but.............WE HAVENT THE STAFF HERE TO DO IT" (what?......)

It took me asking how to hand a route back to get it sorted, right on the last day id have to give the required 4 week notice

BTW, the boss lady at county sent us all and email

"Please ensure your passenger escorts are paid at least the NMW"

So i asked.......... "is that for the whole time in the car or just when a pupil is in the car"

Reply........."well thats a matter between you and the escort"

well dodged that bullet marm

£94 x 5= £470 pw, x 4 =£1, 880 pm , that would do me fine thb

1. Is that including dead miles or just loaded?
2. How many hours will the escort be needed?
3. Whats your cover for car and escort? (i.e. you are contracted to supply both)
4. How many seats on your coach cos you wont get £3 plm for anything less

34 weeks in a school year (191 days typically) and not many 4 week months, 6 weeks no pay in August/September

1. Is that including dead miles or just loaded? -- all in mate
2. How many hours will the escort be needed? -- as long as the run takes tbh
3. Whats your cover for car and escort? (i.e. you are contracted to supply both) --- yes, wife is escort
4. How many seats on your coach cos you wont get £3 plm for anything less-- not a coach mate, i want my own in the dobbie

34 weeks in a school year (191 days typically) and not many 4 week months, 6 weeks no pay in August/September --- i understand all that mate, been doing them for years ( contracted though  ) but know we are getting a lot less than the contractor gets

Me thinks some doing these school runs need to pop in for a maths lesson.

191 school days equates to 38 weeks schooling per year not 34 as previous contributors say.

If as you say the operator(contractor) pays you less than the contracted price and you pay them a weekly fixed sum for a data head/radio perhaps you should be looking into the realms of being an employee.
