It was the selection interviews this evening. Just had a call to say that I have been selected to stand again. There are now 2 wards with vacant seats because one of the independents has resigned. She was elected with me 2 years ago. It is that ward that I am contesting. The same ward that I won 2 years ago. It is expected that Labour will be putting all they have into this ward so it could be a struggle. It is the Labour heartland of the town.

At least they know what they are getting. I told them that I felt let down by the lack of support from the leadership so I felt I had no choice but to resign. They agreed to listen to me if I raise an issue in the future.

well best of look the thing above all is to meet as many voters as possible to chat/convince that you really will represent them. A friend of mine did that stood as an independent in a safe tory ward won by a landslide !! On the run up she made sure she visited EVERY SINGLE ADDRESS in the ward (5 villages) the opposition didn't bother

people really do like to meet and see the person who wants to represent them

I wouldn't be too worried about Labour.

Just carry a picture of Corbyn around with you.

The last election coincided with the general election so some people thought I was campaigning for Sir Alan Duncan, our MP. One chap said to me "Alan foo*ing Duncan, I wouldn't pi55 on him if he was on fire." My reply was " that's ok, there are plenty of others who will." Alan Duncan Laughed when I told him.

Councilors are vital to local government; without them the system as we understand it could not work. However, their role is often misunderstood and there are a number of myths and
half-truths surrounding their position. The introduction of the Localism Act 2011 allied to the abolition of the Standards Board in England has in many cases made the position less clear that it was before. In addition, the rules and approach in Wales are different.
You might find this book interesting
Written by Cornerstone Barristers, Edited by Philip Kolvin
ISBN: 9781780433301 Published by Bloomsbury Professional Price £60.00

It is littered throughout with short case studies of 2 types: hypothetical questions which are then answered; and brief reports of investigations into councillors' conduct from around the country. Those are amplified by Appendix E which contains digests of key cases.
This is not just a handy reference book to Councillors conduct: it is an indispensable guide and should be the first port of call when questions arise. It is potentially even more useful than that. It would be good practice for every councillor to read it when they are first elected. That suggestion would also benefit a great many local government officers.

Without a clear understanding of all parties of the role, responsibilities and restrictions placed upon councillors, local authorities place themselves in a difficult position. They may not make the best use of their councillors and may also find themselves in judicial jeopardy. This book goes a long way to assiting local authorities to get these matter right.
