On the 20th October Watford licensing committee removed numbers control. I understand they are moving towards a system of quality control. You can read the report here.

I suspect those drivers who work for the firm that has the station contract might be pleased at the decision, especially if they intend to change from P/H to Hackney?

I see from the report that some of the PH operators didn't want the council to de-limit.

Let's hope those lads that do choose to change codes tell them where they can now stick their radios. Image

It is understandable that Private hire operators didn't want to give private hire drivers the option of obtaining a hackney license. Perhaps they fear they may have to reduce radio rents to keep existing drivers?

Council halts issue of taxi licences

TAXI drivers this week called for a judicial review into Watford Borough Council's decision to delimit the number of taxis in the town.

As a result, the council will not be issuing any more licences until the decision has been assessed by a judge.

Members of the Hackney Carriage Trade claim their was no consultation about the delimitation, which came into effect on Friday, October 21.

Hackney carriage drivers are against the increased competition, as they feel it will push them out of business.

The council decided to lift controls on the number of taxis in the town, because they felt more taxis would help clear the town centre on Fridays and Saturdays.

Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: "Out of respect for this process, we will not be issuing Hackney licences until it is over. I would still encourage drivers to apply, as their applications will be dealt with in due course."

Shujait Sardar, a Hackney Carriage driver, said the council's plans to delimit taxis was designed to drive people out of the trade.

He said: "There was no proper consultation prior to changing the policy.

"I believe taxis should meet demand and not exceed it."

Is calling for a judicial review the same as applying for one? lol

Judges just love Taxi drivers, I bet theres not a single hi profile judge that hasn't been involved in some form of Taxi litigation? I wonder what Mr Sardar hopes to gain if he ever does go down the road of judicial review? Considering of course that not one case has ever been won by cab drivers since these types of challenges first started in 1986.

Yes, I think you will find it's called churn rate. Initially more taxi's some give up more come in more give up more come in...
It's rampant in Private hire, in Lincoln, 90% PH I am told...
ABC, City Cars, Sams, Rainbow, Acorn, A2B, and many more, all PH firms that have come and Gone, in Sleepy old Lincoln. Wonder Why?

I think you might struggle asking for a judicial review before an act is law.

Oh well, maybe it was 1986. Maybe not even first. Obviously, you don't need me to tell you.

I don't remember when it was and don't feel the need to look it up.

I'm in that kind of mood. ImageImage
