hackney cab driver collapsed and was taken to hospital after a brick was thrown through his windscreen in what drivers fear is an escalating trend of attacks on cabs.

The incident is believed to have taken place on Muirhead Avenue in West Derby , at around 8pm last night.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said it received a call at 7.47pm.

The spokesman added: “The man had collapsed and was unconscious.

“He was taken to Aintree Hospital . It is not believed he had any other injuries.

“Police have been made aware of the incident.”

The man’s condition is currently unknown.

A fellow hackney cab driver said it was “very un-nerving” for the cab community.

He said: “It is disgusting. He could have been killed. It happens all the time - my cab is covered in brick marks.

“Someone is going to be killed soon.”

It is understood that the injured driver lives nearby and was driving back out for work when the incident happened.

His friend added: “It’s unbelievable how many times it happens.

“I have been on Princes Avenue before and a group of young lads walked out on the road, in front of my cab, with bricks in their hand to throw at me.

“Most of the drivers will tell you how often it happens.

“But what happened last night, that is the tipping point for us, people need to know what is going on.”

A Merseyside police spokesman said: "We were called following concern for the safety of a man. Officers attended following reports that a man had suffered a medical episode.

"The man was taken to hospital. It was also reported that damage had been caused to the windows of his car and an investigation is currently underway."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
