Stoke Gifford taxi firm boss jailed after driving while disqualified for the SEVENTH time

The boss of a taxi firm has been jailed after police found he was driving while disqualified for the seventh time. Police followed Jetenderpal Singh when they spotted him driving a Mercedes car at speed in Bristol Road. In a short chase that followed he was clocked at up to 60mph in 30mph zones and reversed into a police car at the end, damaging it.

Bristol Crown Court heard it was his seventh offence of driving while disqualified since 2006. Singh, 36, of Western Court in Stoke Gifford, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police and driving without insurance. The recorder Mr Atkinson QC jailed him for 11 months.

He told Singh: “The court has taken a lenient course with you many times. This is your seventh time for driving while disqualified. “You have slowed down in your offending but one is concerned as to whether you appreciate the gravity of these offences.”

Charley Pattison, prosecuting, said police spotted Singh heading from Hambrook towards Winterbourne and activated their blue lights and sirens. Instead of stopping Singh accelerated and, over some five minutes, sped through speed limits and caused other vehicles to take evasive action, the court heard. When the Mercedes stopped Singh reversed back and came into contact with the police car, scratching its bumper. A probation officer told the judge Singh was trying to build up a convenience store from where he ran a taxi firm.

Alex Daymond, defending, said his client had driven the Mercedes to get fuel, in order to get the car an MOT, and panicked when he spotted police chasing him.
