Hi, anyone know how many cars Uber operates in Edinburgh?

Seen figure of 20,000+ quoted for London, but never any specific figure for the cities.

Just wanted to get an idea of the numbers to work out whether it's all a bit overblown, or whether they really are muscling in on the cities.

20,000+ obviously a lot in London (about the same as number of black cabs), but I've heard they aren't doing quite so well elsewhere, despite the likes of the story at the top of the thread about Uber's impact on the Edinburgh market.

Can only tell you before Uber arrived in Edinburgh the highest phc plate was at around 1300, seen plate 1830 tonight on a 13 year old passat , apparently there's applications pending.

Thought UBER had a strict age limit for vehicles to be part of there set up.

It was phc plated, seen 1870 tonight on a prius, phc car numbers increased rapidly with and after ubers arrival. On the eve of Uber arrival Edinburgh phc car licenses were slashed from £1200 to £500 , no corruption likes.

Had to laugh when the article says the Edinburgh equivalent of the London knowledge can take only a couple of weeks, totally wrong on that one.

The biggest reason for the increase in ph applications is cost, hugely reduced, someone within ecc with a hidden agenda, maybe connected to your old buddies in the ph Skull

Uber drivers in Edinburgh are the bottom of the barrel up here, they're not as popular as the article makes out, haven't seen any existing Edinburgh ph companies go to wall because of the alleged impact Uber are having, younger customers will give them ago but the first time they are charged £40 to go from omni to shore they'll be off like a shot.

As far as I'm concerned I'm doing great, this last year has been my best ever, I'm not seeing the decline in my earnings, our trade will fight fire with Fire and we will prevail, we have the same tech and much more as far as knowledge, reliability, service, trust and an easy to understand pricing system, we too can compete with the discount madness that's going on but hey we don't supplement that discount with extreme surge pricing, without surge pricing uber are out the game, I'd do what Denmark do, meters in all taxi's and private hire, Uber left the building.

On the plus Edinburgh is growing, it's a busy city as far as punters wanting a taxi/ph but it's still way below Uber's larger markets, when we have the quiet periods Uber won't be as attractive and sustainable.

I up for what the future brings, I can only see the positive's, our trade will survive but at regulatory level we have to voice our concerns regarding safety, security, clear knowledge of pricing, a professional service with knowledgeable drivers clean and smart at that, Edinburgh is a hub for our country our councillors have duty to protect it's ambassadors.

Dougie I'm doing great Brown "this last year has been my best ever". You've said this every year since registering on TDO. So how much is a radio position worth in City Cabs these days? Oh and all these plates that are up for sale and no one buying?

THE number of private hire cars in the Capital has more than doubled in the past year and they now outnumber taxis for the first time.

Dougie your trade is FU*KED! http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/n ... -1-4538563

There are now around 1800 private hire vehicles compared to just over 1300 taxis – and one drivers’ representative predicted the number could reach 2000 by the end of the year.

As predicted.... =D> =D> =D>

Seriously Gary you don't drive a taxi anymore, I'm on my 3rd new vehicle since 2012, investing in my tools (M8 Vito) as demand for those tools is growing, as for values, I'm not bothered about that and as you know these values go up as well as down, still worth a lot more than when I bought in at 17

No one is disputing the growth in private hire, the majority though can't deliver the professionalism of the black cab companies, Knowledge Reliability and service adding in safety and security (cctv) trust me Gary our trade will more than survive, our trade is still standing and serving on the front line and well ahead of the cabbie pretenders that are ph drivers.

My comment Gary fighting fire with fire, read it Gary its in print

Dougie, you are as delusional as ever and you are not investing in anything you are simply paying to have a job. I am only taking an interest in the predictions I made more years back than I care to remember and they are all coming to pass. :-| Plate values are on a downward spiral as are radio positions and earnings for the hours you work while running costs and the competition is heading in the opposite direction. Now wait for it Dougie, I TOLD .... =D> You have been in the taxi trade and spouting this shi*e for so long you have lost all concept of how the other half lives.

Dougie, I am not gloating, I feel sad that it has come to this but no one would listen.

Dougie, your trade is FU*KED! :-|

Yes you predicted an implosion of ph Gary I'll give you that, the black cab trade has all the tools and more to combat any significant threat, the drivers coming in to ph are seriously bottom of the barrel, kind of Kestrel lager compared to us the Innis&Gunn of lager, our trade is evolving as my previous link has shown but hey sit back pull a ring off the can of kestrel your drinking and watch the black cab trade go from strength to strength

No, Dougie, I predicted that the restriction on plates would cause the Taxi trade to lose its market share to Ph, Plate values would crash and radio positions would follow suit. I also said the cooperative business model operated by City and CRT was out of date 20 years ago and eventually both companies would go under. :-|

Oh and Dougie, your trade is not evolving it's dying. :-|

This is where your argument falls flat on its face Gary, your saying de-restriction would have stopped the likes of Uber    All I'm saying is thank feck there is a cap on black cabs, if not then we probably would be fecked but it's not Gary, the co-operative model in Edinburgh is our saviour regardless of the ego's within it, we are all in our trade together unlike the ph who are the meek seeking the scraps, those willing to be shafted by The Disruptors, so now lets go back to your nostra prediction's of our trade in Edinburgh, de-restriction would and will be a disaster as de-restriction can't stop The Disruptors attempting to destroy for profit many sectors within our Cities, de-restriction would probably have totally wiped out the value of our license and radio position's, de-restriction would have totally stopped the investment in brand new vehicles, your argument still standing up Gary, I don't think so, I'd slip back into retirement if I where you, you've been out the game too long

We know the game The Disruptors are playing Gary, we are in a position to fight back, their technology is now not unique, co-operative is the way ahead, its us versus the Disruptors, I know what side I'm fighting for

Watch this

Wrong again Dougie, I said de-restriction or increasing the size of the fleet via quality controls as in the London model would allow the fleet to meet public demand and increase its market share, therefore, keeping the pressure on Ph. Uber wasn't even on the agenda. The Ph fleet was getting better organised and growing to meet the demand that the taxi trade refused to recognise for fear of losing its plate "values". Remember the Airport and ECPH? Yeah, well, a wee bird tells me that City Cabs is losing the Airport after the festival...

Dougie, your radio position is worthless and your plate value will soon be gone as will most of your share of the public transport market. I am not making this up, it is happening right under your nose and not just in this city.

I was right in my predictions, it's just that with Uber coming on the scene the whole process has accelerated. You are not fighting back Dougie, you are not in the position to fight anything. It's sad really...

To a degree yes, but nothing stopping existing firms from having a system which matches or surpasses the Uber app.

In other words have what the lids want, and what the oldies want too.
