Up to 50 jobs available as Glasgow Taxis issues call for new drivers

Fancy a change of career and more time out and about on the streets of Glasgow? Then this could be the opportunity for you. Glasgow Taxis Ltd has announced a call for up to 50 new drivers - and all you need is a sound knowledge of the city streets.

An audit of requests by GTL members found a recent spike in opportunities to drive one of more 800 of the company’s black cabs. Glasgow Taxis Ltd Chairman Stephen Flynn, speaking on behalf of the company's executive committee, said: “We’re appealing for more drivers because there are now more Glasgow Taxis on the road than ever before.

“A number of owners are looking for drivers to utilise their cabs, either during day or night shift, which has created a great opportunity for those looking for a career-change to take the taxi driver training course in the knowledge that there are cabs there waiting to be driven.”

Those interested need to pass Glasgow City Council’s taxi knowledge test first - which means classes at the Glasgow Taxi training school, a non-profit run by experienced drivers. Classes are £6 and run Monday to Thursday, 7pm-9pm, every week at the company’s Boden Street HQ, and participants are usually ready after two classes a week over three months.

Driver Sharon Henderson, a former snack van owner, made the switch three years ago and says it’s “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. “The biggest benefit is the flexibility the job gives you. I could take my daughter to and from school and build my day from there.

“I’ve loved it so far. It feels like one big family at Glasgow Taxis. I get along really well with everyone I work with. It’s so different than my previous job as I can be where I want, when I want."

All Glasgow Taxis drivers are vetted through the Scottish Government’s PVG scheme and must also take a customer care course in partnership with Glasgow Life. To find out more, call 0141 554 222 or visit the Glasgow Taxis website.

I thought I would highlight how very kind those Glasgow plate holders are in letting people drive their cabs when they are not, and how desperate things must be that they have to get the press to help fill those empty driving seats.
