non story

Proposals to increase hackney carriage fares - the taxis which can be flagged down or caught in a taxi rank - has been lodged with Norwich City Council.

The proposal, for the first increase since 2014, would not see the existing four tariff structures (day, evenings, Sundays and nights and Christmas and New Year) changed.

But prices would be pushed up because of a reduction in the distance travelled before charges are made.

For example, at the moment, the day rate (between 6am and 6pm) is charged at £3 for the first 40 yards, then 20p for the next 205 yards. While the initial £3 for 40 yards would not change, the proposal is for 20p for the next 194 yards - 11 yards less than at present.

Under that tariff, a journey of three miles which currently costs £8.20 would go up to £8.60 (not including any waiting time) - an increase of 4.88pc.

The Norwich Station Taxi Association, which lodged the request for increases on behalf of all the city’s hackney carriages, said in their submission they were seeking a “modest” increase.

They highlighted how there had been no request for an increase since 2013 and said: “We propose simple adjustments to the present approved yardages to achieve an increase in the region of 3.6pc for all tariffs,

“No increase is sought for waiting times, which reduces the overall value of the increase package.”

So drivers stuck in traffic aren't subject to the rise in the cost of living?

If that's correct then must be one of the shortest flagfall distances in the UK?

Even if it's a typo and the real distance is 400 yards then that's still a very short distance.

(Couldn't find a tariff card on the council's website.)

Yes, looking at a few random tariff cards via Google maybe 400 yards isn't a particularly short distance after all. I'd always thought half a mile was a more typical flagfall distance, but maybe not.

Think I looked at about eight last night, but shortest one was something like 80 yards, so the 40 yards in Norwich must be particularly short.

How can a flagfall include zero metres? :-k

Are you saying the meter clicks up when the car moves off?

You / they pay for the yardage in advance

yup meter ticks over to £1.80 as soon as vehicle moves unfortunately there are certain trade members in grotsville that insist on this they are frightened punters will be put off by a higher flagfall and to be fair a few years ago a couple of locals decided to have their own tariff card with meters set to start at £3.00 but including the first mile within 4 weeks they switched to the default tariff even though they were actually 10p a mile cheaper because punters would not get in their cars

Is there a tariff card available online that shows a 'zero metres/yards' flagfall?

So doesn't that mean the flagfall distance is 1/18th of a mile rather than zero?

NOOOOOO the meter has to be set so that it clicks over the moment you start to move there is NO mileage included you clearly haven't been in the trade long enough to remember the old days BEFORE they started adding a mileage element into flagfalls

Yes, that's what I suggested earlier, I think our posts crossed and I didn't see your earlier one.

When was that then?

Certainly an unusual arrangement today, presumably.

years ago all taxi meters worked that way because they were mechanical driven off a transducer from the speedo cable

Nowadays all vehicles are electronic speedos so meters are likewise
