Taxi driver called ‘Muslim c***’ in racial attack over fare price

A taxi driver who has lived in the UK for 15 years is scared to return to work after he was racially abused and threatened over the price of a fare. The 31-year-old, who does not wish to be named, said ‘an aggressive and horrible’ passenger launched a tirade of abuse over the £42 cab fare on Saturday evening.

During the volley of insults, which were recorded on camera, the passenger calls the cabbie ‘a Muslim c***’ and ‘a Muslim [edited by admin]’. The self-employed taxi driver, originally from Afghanistan, said: ‘The man came up to me and said he was looking to go to Horsmonden, about 12 miles away. ‘I rounded the price to £42.

‘Straight away he was asking me where I was born and then started getting very aggressive and shouting some horrible things. ‘I tried to be as calm as possible and recorded some of it. ‘He seemed to be with his girlfriend and I told him “shame on you, look at your girlfriend, you shouldn’t be talking like this in front of her”. ‘The whole thing went on for about half an hour and I went straight home and couldn’t sleep at all, I’m so worried about working again.’

He then tells him: ‘You’re in England, not in [edited by admin] Bangladesh.’ Police were called to the scene outside Tunbridge Wells railway station in Kent but were unable to find the suspect. Now the victim doubts whether he will continue working as a taxi driver in the UK.

He added: ‘Normally Tunbridge Wells is a very nice town, I have lived here a long time, but it feels like in the last year it has been getting worse and worse – since Brexit. ‘Just this year I have seen about three similar things happen, it really is horrible and very worrying.’

A spokesman for Kent Police said: ‘Kent Police was called at 11.47pm on Saturday, December 30 regarding a reported disturbance outside the railway station in Vale Road, Tunbridge Wells. ‘Officers attended and spoke to a man who reported being racially abused by another man who had left the scene. ‘The officers searched the area but were unable to find him.’

have had to remind my drivers a dozen times over the festive period not to get too greedy with the fares and risk losing regular customers

Was Saturday 30th before midnight, so presumably was just on normal night rate?

But £42 for 12 miles doesn't sound particularly astronomical even at that, and certainly not at festive rates, at least at the council tariffs.

We always cjarge the Council rates for any jobss. Regular customers do not get it any cheaper just because they are regular customers.

Stamford is a lot more competitive than Melton

Unfortunately it is not always that simple! If (and I have been there) the OP decides to hang onto your window/door handle - you are a bit stuffed. Drive away and drag them under your wheels! you know, and I know............who they are going to blame
