The bloody attack - which initially left the man fighting for his life - unfolded in a cul-de-sac on the once-notorious Grizedale estate in Everton.
The victim’s condition is said to have improved overnight with doctors classing him as being in a “serious but stable” condition.
Emergency services were alerted to the shooting after the victim turned up at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
Detectives believe he was in the back of a taxi on Maryport Close, at around 8.10pm, when he was shot in the upper part of one of his legs.
The driver took the man to hospital, where he received treatment for his wounds while a police scrambled to respond to the incident.
The cab, a Ford Mondeo private hire taxi, was examined by forensics officers in the Royal’s car park before being removed by police for further inspection.

This morning a series of cordons blocked alleys and footpaths across the Grizedale estate.
The bottom section of Maryport Close was closed off by police tape and a green sheet lay stretched across the suspected shooting scene.
Merseyside Police retained a presence in the area, with a van guarding the Maryport Close scene and patrol cars stationed on Hillsmore Way and Whitehaven Road - preventing access to the Close through the estate’s network of footpaths.
That network of paths may have provided getaway routes for the gunman, had he been on foot or bike.
People living within the cordoned areas were allowed in and out this morning, though those using Maryport Close as a cut through to get to school and work were turned back.
Beyond the patrol vehicles guarding the shooting scene, other police cars could be seen heading in and out of the estate throughout the morning.
The Grizedale estate, which lies off Robson Street, was known as a trouble hotspot in early 2000s.
It was believed to have been the hub for one of two feuding north Liverpool gangs before a police drive to combat the problems suffered in the area more than a decade ago.
Speaking just hours after last night’s attack, Detective Inspector Kathy Goodwin appealed for details and said: “The investigation is currently in its early stages and we are working to establish what has happened.
“We know that the victim was sat in the rear of the car when he was attacked. He has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
“I would appeal for anyone who was in the area around Maryport Close this evening who has seen any vehicles or individuals acting suspiciously to contact us a matter of urgency as they may have information which is vital to this investigation.
“I want to reassure the public that our commitment to tackling gun crime is as strong as ever and we will continue to take action to protect our communities from the criminal minority.
