It has been alleged that a man was in collision with a vehicle

A man has been arrested following reports of an altercation outside Coventry Railway Station.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the taxi rank of the station, where the incident is believed to have occurred.

Police confirmed that a man has been arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident, which took place at 10.43am.

The man has been taken to custody while investigations are ongoing.

A spokesman said: "Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to text BTP on 61016 or call on 0800405040, with the reference number 207 of 08/06/18."

West Midlands Police confirmed that they also attended the scene, which was led by BTP.

Ongoing unrest at the taxi rank

Today's suspected assault is the second incident to take place at or near to the station's taxi rank in as many days.

On Thursday, West Midlands Police were called to Eaton Road just before 3.30pm amid reports of tensions between Uber drivers and black cab drivers.

Officers attended this but found no sign of disorder.

Eaton Road leads on to Station Square, where Coventry's black cab drivers line up at the taxi rank outside the railway station.

Uber drivers cannot queue for customers at taxi ranks, instead responding to requests from customers via the Uber app.

Last month, a number of drivers from Coventry staged a protest outside City of Wolverhampton Council's Council House, protesting against drivers licensed in other cities being able to operate in Coventry.

Coventry City Council does not issue licences to Uber drivers but it has been revealed that Wolverhampton has issued 241 licences to taxi drivers who have Coventry addresses and are believed to be operating in the city, many of them under the Uber service.
