But don't council's know best?

you cant hide behind the "council knows best" claim, the council only deregged because the "wannaplates" and the "freeeloaders" wanted them. The trade told them what was going to happen, and it did.

I can assure you I don't hide behind the 'council knows best' claim. I think they are the worst people to decide on the issues relating to the taxi/PH trade.

Go to Sheffield and try your simple arithmetic.

100 cars, 200 drivers + de-limit = 500 cars and rising. simple math? simple minded madness!

So you're vehicle numbers rose five fold in Sheffield?

they can have thier own, all they have to do is pay the entry requirement.

Jimbo has a good point about Sheffield, I am afraid TDO's rather simplistic formula doesn't quiet work.

I don't think Jimbo understands it, thus presumably you don't either?

Well I've certainly tried explaining the following numerous times, so perhaps you could point out what's wrong with the following:

If there are currently 100 cars with 200 drivers, and each driver runs his own car and the fleet doubles, how does everyone earn less money?

Perhaps the original 100 earn less because they're not milking the other drivers, but welcome to the real world.

simple arithmetic is beyond the like's of jimbo and 187ums

So only the 100 drivers would be allowed to put on a new cab?

Well, why didn't you tell us that before?

Until a few years ago, the council imposed a limit of 300 licences for Hackney cabs but deregulation in response to legal changes meant anyone able to pass the council's test could ask for a licence, regardless of the number already working in the city. Since then the number has more than doubled to over 600, while private hire taxis have increased from around 600 to more than 800.

so the fleet doubled overnight, even PH increased! and I guess you will now say that these cars are manned only by one driver???

nope what we have here is common folk having to work even harder to make a living?

I bet the rental market is still booming....wonder what the day shift rate is?

Don't seem to mind the common folk working even harder if they are doing it driving your car do you?

Just you and your like hate the thought of drivers doing it in their own.

I would have thought it would be very reasonable, because there are lots available for non-owners to choose from.

As opposed to the crazy rents in some of the restricted areas like Liverpool and Edinburgh.

So only the jockeys take up a plate in TDO land? why would it stop at 200 owner /drivers?

Go and have a read of Myth and Reality - the reason a lot of time was spent writing it was to go beyond endless questions like this that get us nowhere, but a year and a half later and nowhere is exactly where we are

I'm a real nowhere man.

I did read it, and that is one of the miriad unanswered questions.

So, why would it stop at 200 drivers in TDO land?

Do you want to go from restricting PLATES to restricting DRIVERS?

Whats a crazy rent Sussex? it allows people the opportunity to try the business out, ( HC is very different from PH ).

How many hours do they have the car for? whats thier earning potential? you know whats the rate of return?

Even in dereg land, this practice continues.

As for dereg, it might be inevitable, but eventually the wheel will turn, you have to ask yourself how much risk are you prepared to take.

Well if you don't know what a crazy rent is, then I wont even try to define it for you.

But do you think rents are cheaper, on average, in restricted areas, or quota free areas? :-k

I would sooner take a risk without having to pay up to £50,000, than with it.
