Kind of. There's plug-in hybrids where you charge the battery to give 50-80 miles, then when it runs low it reverts to a normal hybrid running on engine/battery.

If there's any doubt -

That was an exception though, at one point I was doing 75mpg. At the end of shift I was down to 68mpg, so yes it is possible.

Just done a check over the last few tax years and my MPGs are

2013/14 = 30.24 - Mondeo Petrol
2014/15 = 41.46 - Mondeo Diesel
2015/16 = 44.06 - Mondeo Diesel
2016/17 = 44.60 - Mondeo Diesel
2017/18 (About 6 months) = 46.57 - Mondeo Diesel
2017/18 (About 6 months) = 62.00 - Toyota Auris Hybrid
2018/19 = 66.39 - Toyota Auris Hybrid

Best I've had from the hybrid over decent mileage is 72.6 over 130miles and 71.4 over a 150mile shift. Actual highest is 73.3 over 65miles.
MPG takes a hit in the hybrid when you have to use the heating, lights and wipers over winter I was only doing between 58 and 62mpg. So I'll expect this years to fall once we hit the colder months again.

I don't do many of the long out of towns but usually drop into mid 50s mpg on the motorway/faster roads.

E250 205bhp 7 speed auto estate

School run 47mpg
Town bump locals 37mpg

Audi A6 Avant 190bhp DSG

best 42mpg (run)
worst 36mpg (town bump locals)

The Moral is..... dont have nice big cars for local cash work

I meant eventually you will be able to buy a car that was 24k for £4k.
But I'm saving nearly £2k a year on fuel, I'll probably keep it for 10 years. So after 10 years the cars almost free !

I do ! Depends on how well you look after them, bodywork, interior, mechanical condition. I look after mine so they last, other drivers turn them into sheds within 5 years.

Last three ;
Mondeo (secondhand) - 9 years 250k
Mondeo (secondhand) - just under 10 years 280k
Mondeo (secondhand) - 10 years 400k !! Would have kept it a bit longer but needed a new injector pump for £1200. Even so It wouldn't have lasted much longer.

That's the age when I got rid, I actually owned each for between 4-7 years. I did have an Octavia as well that didn't even reach 6 years and 150k.

Auris hybrid (new) - ??? but it's wearing better than any of the Mondeos so far.

But I am toying with the idea of trading in at 5 years whilst the car still has value, but that means continuing to pay £200 p/m finance. Or wait the full 10 years and then be paying £400 p/m on a new one.
