No Sussex, Swindon is deregged:

Last night 20/7/05 Swindon voted to remove quantity control in favour of quality control. This now leaves the number of Authorities that do not restrict numbers at 238, restricted authorities stand at 53 and those yet to decide now stands at 52.

Very nice to see that in the report to members the licensing officer put down the doom and scare mongering points from the likes of the T&G.

For every doom and scare they mentioned, the licensing officer had a well thought out reposte.

I just can't work out for the life of me where he found such factual information.

Back to the topic's theme, with idiots doing mad hours (in this case a presently limited area), soon there will come a time when we are restricted to the number of hours we work.

Good thing in my mind.

Still, as long as sitting on the rank does not count as working, you'll be able to stay out 20 hours a day in de-limit land. And you will need to.

So what about the guys who are paying inflated rentals in restricted areas, you never seem to bother about them or the extra hours they have to work?

Until a few years ago, the council imposed a limit of 300 licences for Hackney cabs but deregulation in response to legal changes meant anyone able to pass the council's test could ask for a licence, regardless of the number already working in the city. Since then the number has more than doubled to over 600, while private hire taxis have increased from around 600 to more than 800.

I could have forecast that you would answer in this way on the day the forum started.

Your answer proves the point I've been trying to make for years - there's nothing to indicate that the number of drivers has changed in Sheffield, indeed they may even have DECREASED. I'm quite sure they will have increased though, but you proffer no evidence.

And you have the cheek to question my maths :D

If that's accepted, but who knows?

But it will stop the Fri/Sat boys from working if they already have a full-time job, cos the hours they do during the week could preclude them from driving cabs at the weekend.

Could be the end of the Liverpool cab trade, or so the scare-mongers will state.

Who knows? I know.

Why would a full time job exclude a part time weekender?
Not that there are any part timers here.
One English pound says that the number of drivers in Sheffield has increased on par with the number of cabs.

Someone works, say as a fireman, for 48 hours a week.

That will leave him with zero hours a week to work the cabs.

You could be right, I don't know.

But if the cab market is now up to what it should be, having be surpressed for over a century, then what's the problem?

So no one, including you, will be allowed to work more than 48 hours? How will you pay for your half of your WAV?

but then how many part-timers with other full time jobs actually declare that they are driving and earning another income?

i'd consider myself a part-timer as i only work 3 night a week, but it's still up to 30 hours.

Quite simple really as it will have no effect IMO on the number of customers.

So you will have the same number of drivers and vehicles, and the same number of customers spending the same amount of money. So when you are out you will be far busier than you are at present. Thus you should earn the same money in less time.

It's a win win situation. :D
