Taxis allowed to fly English flag for World Cup as council waives rules

'Hopefully we can have them out all the way to the final'

Taxi drivers will be allowed to fly the English flag as Nottingham City Council has made an exception for the World Cup.

Uber driver Jebraan Jalil, 39, was shocked when he was told by Nottingham City Council that he was not allowed to put St George's flag decorations in his taxi earlier this week.

This is because normally the only things allowed are 'no smoking' signs and a driver's badge.

The council has now clarified that they do not want to stop people getting in to the national spirit and will let them fly the flag - as long as it does not block their vision.

Jebraan, a dad-of-four from Nuthall and passionate football fan, said: "We do not make as much as we used to get. A lot of us can't afford to take the time off to watch the games so bringing it in to the taxis will be great.

"It's everywhere – you can even go in to Greggs and get a St George's cupcake. It builds bridges and love between communities. A lot of drivers come from the Asian community and this shows we are trying to integrate.

"It's absolutely fantastic that we can support our team – hopefully we can have them out all the way to the final. You've got to believe."

Israr Ali, a taxi driver in the city for 15 years, said: "Nobody is going to make money out of it and if it makes people happy to see it here - we'd rather have happy customers.

"I can understand banning them if it was outside and was blowing around but inside it doesn't affect anybody else's driving."

But Ghulam Jelani, a driver for 20 years, added: "If England lose it won't go well because the fans come out and take it out on us. I've heard of that happening before a few years back."

Broxtowe and Gedling borough councils both told the Post that they did not have a specific policy against decoration like this but a spokesman for Broxtowe added: "We would recommend that our taxi drivers check with their insurance provider before flying flags from their cars to ensure that they do not invalidate their cover."

A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “Normally ‘no smoking’ signs and a drivers badge are the only things that should be displayed in a taxi.

"However, we know during the World Cup people would like to display their national flag and we wouldn't want to stop them from doing this, so long as they are secure and don't obstruct the windscreen or windows.”

It has not been made clear why other decorations are not usually permitted.

Interesting angle, and good way for council to shift the onus on deciding the matter.

Cotswold drivers can fly the flag for England (or any other World Cup competitors)

https://www.punchline-gloucester.com/ar ... or-england

Cotswold district taxi drivers have been told they can show their support for England in the World Cup.

Cotswold District Council has said they can fly the England flag on their taxis (or the national flag of other countries still competing) during the current World Cup tournament should they wish to do so.

The council's cabinet member responsible for licensing, Cllr Mark MacKenzie-Charrington is giving his backing to the national team and wants to give taxi drivers the option of showing their support for a limited period.

He said: "Now that the national team has advanced to the quarter finals, it's great to see so many local people and businesses getting into the spirit of the World Cup. It's an exciting time and we wish the team every success.

"I have no problem with allowing taxi drivers based in the district to fly small England car flags while the World Cup is in progress, provided they are well-secured, do not block their vision or impact on safety in any way."

At other times of the year, taxi drivers are only permitted to display advertising and signage in line with policy requirements.

Interesting that the policy depends on how far England have advanced in the tournament

But I'm sure the rule and process of changing it are legally watertight

Why don't councilors/drivers/licensing officers just keep quiet, in just over a week it will all be finished.

Until two years time that is.

Yes, it's a good thing it's only a week or two every couple of years, or it might be another encouragement to cross-bordering

are you suggesting Scottish football fans are crossing the border and supporting England because their team only qualifies once every hundred years ? :-#
