Enfield acid attack: Minicab driver fights to keep his sight after being sprayed with noxious substance in carjacking

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/m ... 82501.html

A minicab driver is fighting to keep his sight after being sprayed in the face with acid in a “vicious” early morning carjacking.

The 63-year-old driver was attacked next to his silver Toyota Avensis on a road in Enfield early on Saturday.

Two men are thought to have flagged down his car and when he got out to confront them, they approached and sprayed the noxious substance in his face. The men then grabbed his car keys and drove off.

One neighbour said: “It was a minicab driver who they flagged down and threw acid at his face.

“I don’t know if they wouldn’t pay or it was argument but I think they just wanted his car. We don’t know the man but it’s so horrible. We just hope he is OK.”

Neighbour Kay Brown, 72, said police told her the Toyota was flagged down by the attackers who laid an ambush on Bell Lane at the junction with Brimsdown Avenue.

She said: “It’s disgusting what lengths people will go to steal from someone. You’re not safe anywhere any more. The police told us they flagged him down and then attacked him in the car.

“These vile people need to be caught, it’s really awful. I hope he gets better soon.”

Neighbour Michael Nash, 73, said he was woken by flashing blue lights as police arrived to treat the victim. He said: “The police were pouring gallons of water over him from a big container. Then two fire engines turned up and more police vans and an ambulance.

“I could see police running around the park looking for them afterwards but they were gone.”

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to the attack at 2am on Saturday.

The victim was taken to an east London hospital where he remains with eye injuries that police say are believed to be life-changing.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to the attack at 2am on Saturday and released details of the Toyota Avensis, registration BG58 LZK.

DC James Rush, from Enfield Major Crime Unit, said: “This was a vicious robbery all the more appalling because of the brazen use of a strong chemical to rob the victim. I would ask for anyone who was in Albany Park or the surrounding area at the time of this incident to contact police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
