An OAP cabbie who mowed down a man in Paisley town centre after a row at a taxi rank has been banned from driving.

Jim Corbett mounted the kerb in a pink hackney and ran over Christopher Flannigan.

Corbett, 73, denied a charge of dangerous driving but was convicted yesterday following a trial at Paisley Sheriff Court .

Prosecutors claimed he hit Flannigan after the pair began rowing and he “lost the rag.”

Blair Dalgleish, 24, said he climbed into the back of the hackney after a night out with pals – and watched as Corbett hit Flannigan while he was in the car.

He explained: “There was an argument between a taxi driver and a boy.

“As we approached to get in the taxi, we were refused because he thought we were with that boy.

“He let us in when he realised we weren’t. We were sitting in the back and the argument continued between the driver and the boy.

“The driver put his foot on the accelerator.

“The boy jumped out the way.

“He went to drive away, and the boy kicked the passenger side door.

“The taxi mounted the kerb and hit the boy. He hit the ground.

“The taxi reversed and the boy got up. I could see he was hobbling.”

The incident was captured on CCTV and the footage was played to the court, showing the pink cab with Paisley 2021 branding veering towards the lad.

It then circled around and mounted the pavement next to the shelter shortly before 2am on August 28 last year.

Corbett was quizzed by police who were treating the incident as attempted murder, after they stopped him when he returned to pick up more passengers later on the same night.

He told detectives he’d tried to “chase” Flannigan away with the car because he had tried to steal a bike locked against some railings.

Corbett gave evidence in his own defence, claiming he became angry when his motor was kicked during the spat.

He said: “I came into the rank and I saw a young lad trying to steal a bike or wreck a bike. He was battering it off the railings.

“I stopped and put my window down and said something along the lines of, ‘The chap maybe coming off the train needs that for his work’.

“He ran over and kicked the car and spat on me. I was protecting myself and the car.

“Never mind dangerous driving, never mind careless driving, what I did was stupid driving.”

Corbett said his cab was kicked “seven or eight” times and he feared there could have been thousands of pounds of damage.

The court was also shown dash cam footage which showed Corbett racing towards the lad and mounting the pavement – showing Flannigan disappearing from shot in front of the motor.

Corbett, of Stoney Brae, Paisley, returned to the dock yesterday to learn his fate.

Procurator Fiscal Depute John Penman asked Sheriff Tom McCartney to convict Corbett of dangerous driving, saying: “He wouldn’t accept it was dangerous driving – he said it was stupid.

“The manner of driving far exceeded stupidity – it fell far below that of a competent and careful driver.

“He repeatedly drove his motor vehicle on to the pavement.

“He set off in the direction of Christopher Flannigan, who had to get out of the road of it.

“He drove on to the pedestrian part of County Square. He drove at him and that is seen on CCTV footage and the dashcam.

“There is independent evidence of that from the civilian witnesses who were there – they saw Christopher Flannigan hobbling or limping after getting off the ground.

“He’s knocked on to the ground.

“He’s driven at by the accused.

“He’s struck by the taxi.

“The accused drove at Christopher Flannigan on the first occasion and on a second occasion - he knocked him to the ground.”

Sheriff MacCartney said he had no doubt of Corbett’s guilt and convicted him of the offence.

He could have caged Corbett for up to 12 months for the offence but, after hearing he was a first offender at the age of 73, he fined him £400 and banned him from driving for 12 months, ordering him to sit and pass the extended driving test before getting behind the wheel again once his ban is over.

Obviously Paisley's taxi ranks are best avoided, but at least there's no driver involvement here :?

Woman bit off part of man's ear in drunken taxi row

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland- ... t-45410274

A woman has admitted biting part of a man's ear off during an argument in a taxi queue in Renfrewshire.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Linda McKillop, 35, bit into Alan Brogan's ear and spat it out following a row at a rank in Paisley.

He underwent surgery to reattach the damaged tissue but it had to be removed again a week later.

McKillop pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Brogan, 41, by biting off part of his ear, leaving him scarred for life.

The assault took place in the early hours of 21 October last year in Paisley's County Square.

Mr Brogan had been on a night out in Glasgow and got the train back to Paisley.

McKillop walked straight up to the rank and straight to the door of a taxi when it pulled in, despite the fact Mr Brogan was first in the queue.

Caught on CCTV

The pair began arguing and the taxi drove off before McKillop, who was drunk, lost her temper and lashed out.

Mr Brogan tried to walk away but McKillop ran at him, scratched him on the face and then grabbed him by the head before biting him.

The attack was captured on CCTV and showed Mr Brogan putting his hand up to his ear.

Procurator Fiscal Depute Alan Parfery said: "The accused was biting his ear off - his upper ear, off.

"He then had to strike her to get away.

"He raises his hand to his right ear and the accused makes off.

"The ear was spat on to the roadway - there was blood."

The court heard the attack has had a lasting impact on the victim.

Mr Parfrey added: "Mr Brogan has altered his haircut so it covers both ears to try and hide the permanent disfigurement he has suffered."

Phone confession

The court heard McKillop was so drunk she phoned police and told them her ear had been bitten off - before telling officers she had actually bit someone else's ear.

Defence solicitor Amy Spencer said she admitted her guilt to police almost immediately.

Sheriff Seith Ireland called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing.

He said: "You have pleaded guilty to a very serious offence indeed on the unfortunate Mr Brogan.

"All options, including a sentence of imprisonment, are open to the court."

McKillop will be sentenced next month.
