Pretty humdrum story this, but you'd think the drivers had only been in the trade five minutes - one says he's 'new', but turns out the other's been driving for five years

Thieves break into cars of Dundee taxi-driving cousins

Two taxi-driving cousins have been left counting the cost after thieves broke into their cars and stole cash.

Irfan Nassir and Saifal Zaveri, both 37, from Lochee, had their Nissan Leaf vehicles broken into on Clepington Road, close to Swannie Ponds.

The driver’s side windows of both taxis had been smashed and cash and equipment was stolen from each of them.

Saifal said: “I am a new taxi driver and I have never come across anything like this before.

“There were seven or eight cars parked on that side of the street and only two of them were broken into.

“They left the Mercedes and BMWs and chose my vehicle and my cousin’s taxi.”

Saifal said he had about £70 in cash taken along with the money dispenser used in the taxi.

He added: “There has been no progress made so far. The police said it seemed like a planned attack.”

Irfan, who has worked as a taxi driver for five years, said he had never experienced anything like Sunday’s break-in.

He said: “I am struggling to get the windows replaced so that means the taxi will be taken off the road for a few days.

“My cousin’s taxi won’t be repaired until next week either.

“I still have a family to feed. We’re a bit upset about it and it’s affecting our livelihood.

“A passer-by rang my doorbell after it happened to let me know that the taxi had been broken into.

“It happened at around 9pm or 10pm so it was not too late.

“And it happened just off a busy main road so there is a good chance someone might have seen something.”

He added: “I think it is a targeted attack by someone who has been an opportunist.

“There were three BMWs in the row of cars but they did not have any issues.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers are investigating thefts from two cars on Clepington Road, near to the junction with Martin Street, which happened between 9-10.10pm on Sunday.

“Two taxis, both Nissan Leafs, had windows smashed and items stolen.

“If you have any information which could assist our inquiries, please call 101 and quote CR/20728/18.”

Me.
Well there would be, plus an ipad, iphone, laptop, PDA, £200 cash, dashcam, satnav and a gold watch - if someone smashed a window and I was putting an insurance claim in ! No point in just claiming for a window is there
