Police called after explosive row between private hire and black cab drivers

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/li ... w-15515055

The angry scenes happened in the city centre

Police are investigating after reports of a disturbance between a private hire taxi driver and the driver of a Hackney cab.

Officers were called to Parliament Street in Liverpool City Centre at around 9.30pm on Saturday night after it was reported that the driver of a private hire car had verbally abused the black cab driver and his passengers.

The hackney driver was parked on Parliament Street at the time - and said that the private hire driver left the scene after the reported abuse.

Police said that no one was injured during the incident - and said no weapons were seen or used.

A 43 year-old man has since voluntarily attended at a police station and has been spoken to and enquiries remain ongoing.

Not much to see here, but according to someone in the comments section who claims to be the HC driver involved:

Quote:
"I am the hackney driver who this happened to an where is the part with uber driver run to the boot of his car an pulled the mechete on me!!!"

Which is maybe why the Echo making a bit of a fuss about it while at the same time not saying very much about what happened. But if the driver's claim is correct then that certainly contradicts what the police said about no weapons being "seen". Of course, that might depend on who was doing the seeing.

Doubt it, somehow, because the driver hasn't been identified, either directly or indirectly, so there's no damage to his reputation as would be required by a defamation action.

(And if there was an actionable defamation evident, the admin of this site (as well as me!) would also be responsible as further 'disseminating' it  Just as the Echo as well as the HC driver would be if the PH driver had been named online.)

But defamation is a bit like that perjury accusation that the LTDA made against Uber's former boss - if action was always taken regarding these things then the courts just wouldn't be able to cope.

Of course, the papers often skate on thin ice with regard to these things - the kid kicking the leaves at the cab, and the other one who claimed he was left stranded are a couple of recent examples, which the drivers both denied. Of course, that's maybe why the drivers aren't named, and there's nothing specific enough to identify them, and when the first driver was identified that was when they gave him a right to reply and the driver had identified himself, so to that extent they've settled it in the pages of the newspaper rather than going to court.

And even if there was a defamation action, not sure if there would be any licensing implications, although that's not beyond the realms of possibility.

All of which is probably why you didn't sue that lady who falsely accused you of allsorts at the Morrison's filling station - whatever happened to that, by the way? 8-[

A black taxi driver claims an angry Uber driver in Liverpool City Centre brandished a WEAPON from his boot after a row in the street.

This week the ECHO reported that police were called to Parliament Street on Saturday evening after a row between a private hire driver and a hackney carriage driver.

Now the cab driver, Anthony Rimmer, has got in touch to explain what he said happened - which included the Uber driver brandishing a weapon from his car.

He said: "I was parked up outside the Peaky Blinders bar with my lights on and there was an Uber in front of me with its hazards on.

"There were some girls -they were from Clitheroe - and were trying to get to Aintree, they tried to get into the Uber and the driver started screaming at them, telling them to get out.

"So they got out and came over to me to see if I was free and they got in.

"The Uber driver then got out of his car, slammed his back door and walked over.

"He was shouting at them, calling them 'horrible women' and 'horrible sluts' - so I put my window down and asked what was up and he started giving me a load of abuse.

"So I got out of the cab and told him not to speak to me that way - and he threw a punch, which missed."

It was at this point that Anthony - from Huyton - who has been a Cabbie for two years, said the driver walked over to his boot and pulled out a weapon with a handle.

He added: "I went to his boot and pulled out a weapon, it had a grip on it - and so I drove away."

It is not clear what weapon this was - although the ECHO has seen messages sent out to other taxi firms claiming a machete was seen.

This has not been confirmed by Merseyside Police who said that while officers were called to the scene - no weapons were seen or used.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Officers were called to Parliament Street in Liverpool City Centre at around 9.30pm on Saturday night after it was reported that the driver of a private hire car had verbally abused the black cab driver and his passengers.

"The hackney driver was parked on Parliament Street at the time - and said that the private hire driver left the scene after the reported abuse.

"Police said that no one was injured during the incident - and said no weapons were seen or used.

"A 43 year-old man has since voluntarily attended at a police station and has been spoken to and enquiries remain ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 18400052664."

Mr Rimmer has sent the ECHO images of his hackney carriage license to prove he is who he says he is.

Uber has been contacted for a response.
