Two arrested after knifepoint taxi robbery in Carlisle

https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/1729 ... -carlisle/

A taxi was stolen at knifepoint during an early morning robbery in Carlisle today.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

It happened near to B&M Bargains in Wigton Road at 5.45am.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Cumbria Police said they received a report of a knife-point robbery involving a taxi.

The vehicle – a white Skoda Octavia taxi – was subsequently found burnt out and abandoned in the Cummersdale area.

Two men, both in their 20s, were found by officers in the Dalston area.

The men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of robbery and drink driving.

They are currently in police custody.

Detective Sergeant Chris Brennand is appealing for witnesses.

He said: “Whilst two men were swiftly arrested, I would like to urge anyone who might have information which could assist us to get in touch.

“We would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw the robbery incident in Wigton Road, anyone who witnessed the car being abandoned or anyone who saw anyone suspicious between the car being abandoned in Cummersdale and the men being arrested in the Dalston area.”

Anyone with information should contact police, referencing incident 33 of December 11.

Carlisle men facing “inevitable” jail terms following knifepoint robbery of taxi driver

https://www.cumbriacrack.com/2019/01/08 ... xi-driver/

TWO men have been warned by a judge that jail is “inevitable” after a taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in Carlisle.

James Mark Thompson and Lexi Elliott, both aged 23, appeared at the city’s crown court today (TUES) in connection with crimes committed on December 11 last year.

Cumbria police said at the time that officers had been called at 5-45am following the report of a knifepoint robbery of a taxi in the Wigton Road area of Carlisle, close to B&M Bargains.

Nobody was hurt during that incident. The taxi – a Skoda Octavia – was later found burnt out and abandoned in the Cummersdale area.

In court this morning, Thompson and Elliott admitted both robbing the taxi driver of the Skoda, and a second charge of arson. In addition, Thompson pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a knife in a public place.

Judge James Adkin adjourned the case for the preparation of background reports on the two defendants; and to give the taxi driver a chance to speak about the impact of their crime on him.

Thompson and Elliott, both of addresses at Highfield Avenue, Carlisle, were remanded in custody, and are due to be sentenced at the crown court on January 31.

“It is inevitable you will both be sent to custody,” Judge Adkin told the pair. “It is just a question of how long.”

Carlisle men jailed for almost eight years after knifepoint robbery of taxi driver

Two men who carried out a terrifying early-morning knifepoint robbery of a taxi driver in Carlisle have been jailed for a total of almost eight years.

The city's crown court heard how their victim went to pick up a fare in darkness at Alexander Street at 5.30am on December 11.

Lexi Elliott and James Thompson - both aged 23 - got in with jacket hoods pulled tight around their faces. They asked to be taken to a B&M Bargains store, on Wigton Road, where Thompson - high on alcohol and cocaine - got out and brandished a Stanley knife with the blade concealed, forcing the frightened driver to flee.

His Skoda vehicle was driven off and found several hours later in the Dalston area, "totally destroyed" by fire.

In a deeply moving victim impact statement read to court today, the driver spoke of being "fragile" and "already at the brink" following the death of his wife two years previously. On his mobile phone - taken in the robbery but never recovered - were "the last years I had with my wife".

"Being robbed at knifepoint tipped me over the edge," stated the taxi driver.

Of the missing phone, he added: "They have taken a significant part of my life away from me."

Elliott and Thompson, both of Highfield Avenue, Carlisle, were jailed for 49 months and 41 months, respectively. They had admitted robbery and arson, with Thompson also admitting illegal knife possession.

Passing sentence, Judge James Adkin told the pair: "It just goes to show the fact that those who commit offences of knifepoint robbery can never know exactly the condition of their victims."

He added: "You both are responsible for the lingering upset and pain that the loss of that telephone has caused."

After the case, Detective Constable Andrew Metcalf said: “I am pleased that both have been brought before the courts within months of the offence.

“This was a pre-meditated attack on a person who serves the public and taken their means of income.

“Today’s sentencing shows how seriously both the police and the courts take such attacks and that they will not be tolerated.”
