Isle of Wight taxi fares set to rise for first time in six yearshttps://onthewight.com/isle-of-wight-ta ... six-years/The proposed increase in taxi fares on the Isle of Wight follows a consultation last year. Find out how much the average journey will cost if approved. From what I can see there's so many inaccuracies in this piece that it's probably better just to quote each section and then comment on the figures etc. Not sure where the proposed figures come from, but was alerted by some of the comments on the website, so had a look at the Isle of Wight's current tariff card, which is reasonably straightforward as regards the figures - a half-mile flagfall, then quarter-mile increases on the running mile, and nice, easy to work with increments at that:

The cost of a taxi will increase by 33p per mile — from £1.57 to £1.90. The initial cost of flagging down a taxi will also rise by 50p.
The Tariff 1 flagfall is £3.00 for a half mile. The running mile is 4 x 45p = £1.80.
So where the £1.57 figure comes from is anyone's guess.

Journey costs
This means the maximum Islanders could pay for a five mile journey between 8am and 10pm (excluding bank and public holidays) is £13.40, compared to £11.10 previously.
The £11.10 Tariff 1 figure is the only one I can reconcile with the tariff card for the five mile trip, ie £3.00 flag for the first half mile, then 4.5 miles @ £1.80/mile. So £3.00 + £8.10 = £11.10

A five-mile journey between 10pm and midnight could cost £18.75, compared to £16.65.
A five-mile journey after midnight looks set to cost a maximum of £30.35, compared to £27.75.
Not a clue where the current figures come from here. For a start, there are no five pences on T2, 3 & 4 flagfalls, and no five pences on the increments, so where do the five pences on the current figures come from?
And using the same calculations as on the Tariff 1 figure, for a five mile trip my figures are:
T2 - £15.30 (10pm to midnight)
T3 - £20.40 (after midnight)
T4 - £25.50
5+ passengers are the next tariff up, but even ignoring that possible confusion the figures don't add up - the maximum possible five mile cost is £25.50 according to the tariff card, but the paper says it could be up to £27.75

The luggage charge also looks set to double, from 10p per piece of luggage to 20p.
The current tariff card says that the charge is 20p per individual piece of luggage

Outcome of consultation
The plans follow a consultation with taxi drivers on the Isle of Wight, with most citing increased running costs as the reason a price hike is needed.
One person said:
“I believe the tariff should increase. I run a small firm of two taxis in Ventnor and costs are increasing rapidly. Fuel is by far my largest overhead and it has increased by over 20 per cent in the last year.
“This, along with an increase in all my overheads — which includes driver commission, telephones, insurance and vehicle replacement.
“I have found trying to recruit drivers very difficult due to the pay levels that we can afford to offer.”
Usual stuff, so no need to comment further than elsewhere.

The last price increases were in 2013 and 2016.
If the plans are approved by the licensing committee on Monday, a formal notice will be issued.
But the headline says it's the first fare increase for six years?
