Just in case anyone can't view the video, the photo below is just after the driver has cut into the give way junction, clearly crossing the double hatched lines on the wrong side of the road. In the photo you can just see how close the car is to the kerb.

Strange, though, that the cyclist didn't seem to take any action to avoid the collision. Seemed to just plough on regardless of the obvious hazard.

Shocking head cam footage of the incident shows cabbie driving on wrong side of road

A cabbie who was driving on the wrong side of the road when he crashed into a cyclist has been stripped of his licence.

The incident was caught on the head camera of cyclist Dylan May as he was riding along Gutteridge Street, in Coalville, in the early hours of Sunday, January 11.

The shocking footage reveals that after the collision, which left Mr May with injuries to his right arm, shoulder and elbow, and caused significant damage to the bike, the taxi driver drove off without stopping to check on the victim.

Licensing officers at North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) launched an investigation and, using Mr May’s footage, traced the driver and ultimately took his licence to drive a cab away.

Officials have chosen not to name the driver as, they said, it might lead to the disclosure of confidential information.

Cabbie initially blamed victim

However they have said the taxi driver initially chose to blame the cyclist, citing a different location for the crash and claiming that the cyclist had been in the middle of the road.

The driver only later admitted being at fault and driving away from the scene after being shown the helmet camera footage.

In light of the seriousness of the incident itself, the failure stop and the "clear dishonesty" about the crash after the event, NWLDC has revoked the drivers’ licence.

What the victim says

Mr May said: “I still now can’t believe somebody would collide with a cyclist and just drive off, especially a so-called professional taxi driver.

“The licensing team at the district council has been very helpful and understanding, and the matter was sorted quickly.”

'Appalling incident'

The council’s community services spokeswoman Councillor Alison Smith said: “This was an appalling incident.

"The quality of the driving which led to the collision was poor, but the reaction of driving away and then lying about the incident afterwards was particularly unacceptable.

“Taxi driving is a profession and we’re delighted that the majority of drivers in North West Leicestershire have very high standards and integrity. This driver, though, clearly lacked both, and is no longer licensed to work in our district.

“We want people to feel confident and safe when they use taxis, and our efforts to revoke this driver’s licence shows our commitment to ensuring this.”

The matter has been reported to the police. No arrests have been made but inquiries are underway.

Lots of comments about why driver not named and shamed, but one factor may be the ongoing police investigation?

Maybe because the license was revoked in a 'behind closed doors' committee meeting.

No doubt that's another factor, and obviously we discussed that at length a few weeks ago

But from what I can work out it was the council who released the video, which seems strange in view of the ongoing criminal investigation...
