The thread title is my own take, not the newspaper's. Nothing particularly exciting about the article or the student scheme, but reckon it's all part of Glasgow Taxi's PR offensive to claw back work lost to Uber and other PH operations.

One comment below the article (which I've included below) probably sums up the situation nicely - Uber is mopping up the student work. Nice bit of free advertising though.

(Recall that Glasgow Taxis has about 800 black cabs (almost 60% of Glasgow's HCs) and claims to be the biggest HC circuit outside London.)

Taxi scheme helps over 150 stranded Glasgow students get home safely

Over 150 Glasgow students stranded without money were taking home by a city taxi firm last year.

The Student Taxi Scheme, led by Glasgow Taxis Ltd in partnership with the University of Glasgow, Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian University, was launched in 2015.

The programme allows any university student in the city without cash to get home in a Glasgow Taxi, just by using their matriculation card.

Through the initiative, Glasgow Taxis Ltd can provide the students with access to a Safe Taxi by calling and quoting a code available from the university. The student then gives the driver their student card and repays the cost to their Students’ Union when they collect their card after one working day.

A spokesman for Glasgow Taxis Ltd said: “We’re very proud of the relationship we have with the city’s universities and nowhere is that more important than through our Safe Taxi Scheme, which has now been running for almost four years.

"First and foremost, I’d like to thank our members and drivers for supporting this scheme and for their role in ensuring these 150 students all made it home safely last year, many of them new to the city of Glasgow.

“The stereotypical view is that these are students who have run out of money at the end of a night out, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

"Two recent cases involved one student who had been admitted to hospital and another at a police station who had witnessed an incident. Thankfully they were aware of our scheme and able to get home safely and quickly, alleviating not only their own stress but that of their families and friends.

“It’s another demonstration of Glasgow Taxis Ltd giving back in our position as a friend of the city. I’m delighted to confirm that we are committed to continuing the Safe Taxi Scheme throughout 2019 and look forward to continuing to support the three universities and their students when they need us most.”

Fatemeh Nokhbatolfoghahai, Vice President of Student Support at the University of Glasgow, added: “Over the last three years many of our students have benefitted from our partnership with Glasgow Taxis.

"This safety net plays an important role in protecting students at moments when they are often vulnerable and isolated with no financial means to get home. Student safety has long been a priority for The Students’ Representative Council and The University of Glasgow and we look forward to continuing to work with Glasgow Taxis.”

The announcements came shortly after Glasgow Taxis Ltd unveiled a new look to help demonstrate the variety of work and acts of kindness its people carry out on a daily basis – as Your City’s Friend.

Joe Black wrote:
'This is laughable. There is no partnership with Glasgow's universities as the mass usage of Uber at any of the universities or its student residences will prove. The student usage of black hacks has fallen dramatically as well as the night time student business. Schemes like this are just inconvenient for the drivers doing them. While private hire firms were busy promoting and selling their service at all of the universities of Glasgow, Glasgow taxis felt they were too good to do the same. End result the hacks lost out to the student economy. Need to get the finger out.

Suspect Glasgow Taxis has something like 1,500 drivers, so with 150 students taking advantage of the scheme in one year, only one in ten drivers does one of the fares in a whole year, so hardly seems worth the effort.

Of course, these things are more about generating goodwill than simple numbers, and thus resulting in more work, but bet the drivers are pished off fannying about with this kind of thing while Uber will be mopping up the student work because they don't need cash anyway.

(Had one student last night, who seemed to say: "Do you take contact lenses?"

I'm thinking :-s

Of course, it was 'contactless', not 'contact lenses'

Either I'm going deaf, or the student was pished and slurring a bit. Probably a bit of both 8-[ )

Problem with using the press for PR purposes is that it's not always good news. Good news day at Uber's Glasgow HQ, though - assuming they have one :?

Glasgow Taxis boss Stephen Flynn suspended ongoing investigation

TAXIS boss Stephen Flynn has been suspended from his post amid an ongoing inquiry into the organisation’s finances.

It is understood the inquiry into the matter concerning the Chairman of Glasgow Taxis relates to an issue regarding around £10,000 of advance wages, which came to light recently.

However, the Evening Times also understands the money has now been paid back in full.

According to insiders, the incident has not been reported to police.

A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said there was no ongoing investigation into Mr Flynn.

Glasgow Taxis Ltd is believed to be dealing with the issue internally.

A spokesman for the Glasgow Taxis confirmed that Mr Flynn has been suspended and that an investigation is currently under way.

The spokesman added: “As this is a live process involving one of our members it would not be appropriate to comment at this time.”

One taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said: “Stephen Flynn is a well-kent face in Glasgow and this has come as a shock to people in the taxi industry so I’m sure it will be to passengers as well.

“He’s a popular guy and pretty well liked so any investigation like this is surprising.”

“The AGM is on Monday night and questions are going to be asked.

The Glasgow Taxis Ltd AGM (Annual General Meeting) will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 7pm on Monday.

It is understood Mr Flynn is still a board member and so should attend the meeting.

Another driver said: “It’s a bit of a talking point going around the ranks in Glasgow at the moment.”

Mr Flynn has been contacted for comment.

Well known face, basically.

Don't think 'kent face' is a misspelling of c***face, though could be wrong :-s

Glasgow Taxis's Stephen Flynn speaks out after news of his suspension

GLASGOW Taxis boss Stephen Flynn has confirmed all money has been paid back following his suspension amid an inquiry into finances.

As revealed in the Evening Times, an issue connected to £10,000 of advance wages has prompted a probe at the taxi company.

But Mr Flynn, chairman of Glasgow Taxis, has now spoken out to give his side of the story.

He said: "It is right to say there was an advance of wages but all the money has been paid back.

"We have been audited and the accounts signed off by all members of the board.

"There is a note about this in the AGM booklet so everything is transparent and nothing being hidden from our members."

The Glasgow Taxis Ltd AGM (Annual General Meeting) will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 7pm on Monday.

Mr Flynn said any questions from members will be answered.

The incident has not been reported to the police and is being handled internally by the firm.

For what it's worth, at around the same time as Flynn's denial above, this appeared on the Daily Record's site, which again isn't good news for Glasgow Taxis - the Evening Times is the Glasgow evening paper, while the Daily Record is like Scotland's Daily Mirror, and the version below sounds slightly spicier than the Evening Times one, and there's not such a prominent denial from Flynn.

Glasgow taxi boss suspended from firm over alleged financial irregularities

Stephen Flynn has had to step down from his post temporarily due to the financial probe.

A high-profile taxi boss who heads one of Britain’s biggest cab firms has been suspended during a financial probe.

Glasgow Taxis chairman Stephen Flynn has had to step down from his post temporarily after alleged irregularities were discovered.

The Record understands the internal investigation relates to more than £9000 which was spotted during an audit. Sources said the money has now been paid back in full.

A driver said: “It is outrageous. This should be dealt with properly and that means getting the police involved as soon as anything that looks questionable is spotted.

“Innocent until proven guilty and all that but this shouldn’t just be dealt with internally. Stephen is a well-known figure and a popular man. They are desperate to try to minimise any negative PR but that will just blow up in their faces.

“An investigation is a good start but more needs to be done. The firm’s AGM is next week – that should be interesting.”

Flynn has been an outspoken critic of Uber, the online cab hailing service.

Previously, he said: “When booking a taxi the only way to ensure a fully licensed and disclosed vehicle and driver is to use a recognised company. Our track record speaks for itself.”

The Glasgow Taxis Ltd AGM will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 7pm on Monday. It is understood Mr Flynn is still a board member and may attend the meeting.

The firm said: “As this is a live process involving one of our members it would not be appropriate to comment at this time.”

As are many, but haven't seen many others take a £9,000 wage advance. :-k

Glasgow taxi boss sacked from firm over £9k financial irregularities

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scot ... m-14732407

Stephen Flynn, The Daily Record understands, has appealed the sacking from Glasgow Taxis.

A taxi boss who heads one of Britain’s biggest cab firms has been axed after a financial probe.

Glasgow Taxis chairman Stephen Flynn was suspended after alleged irregularities were discovered and has now been expelled from the company’s board.

The Record understands he has appealed to its executive committee.

It has been reported that the internal investigation related to a sum of more than £9000, which was spotted during an audit.

Sources said the books are now back in order.

One driver at the firm said: “Everyone is glad that he is gone. He is a well kent face but he needs to take this on the chin.”

Another driver said: “It’s a bit of a talking point just now on every rank in Glasgow.”

Flynn said earlier this month: “It is right to say there was an advance of wages but all the money has been paid back.”

Last night, Glasgow Taxis Ltd said: “As this is remains a live process, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

TBH they are, IMO, equally at fault.

That committee's weak processes allowed the money to go in the first place.

Defo more than one person at fault here.
