A taxi driver has been fined for filming an M25 crash on their phone while driving past a police officer.

The private hire vehicle was seen getting footage of a Saturday afternoon (June 29) crash on the anticlockwise carriageway between Junction 12 ( M3 ) and Junction 11 ( Chertsey ).

In a tweet, the Surrey Police Roads Policing Unit said the driver was "more interested in filming" than looking at the road and as a result had failed to notice the officer standing nearby.

A photo shows the light blue Toyota on the hard shoulder next to the crash, with emergency services visible in the background.

The tweet read: "The driver of this car was more interested in filming the RTC on their phone than looking at the road ahead.

"They also failed to notice the @HighwaysEngland officer trying to stop the traffic with the police officer stood next to him. The driver will receive points and a fine."

Emergency services attended the crash that closed two lanes, with a separate tweet from police suggesting that a person had been injured.

The cabbie, who had no paying customers on board at the time, was handed a fine and given points on their licence for the costly offence.

Officers said in a follow up tweet that they "will be notifying the licensing authority" of the incident.

For what it's worth, someone in the Twitter comments says it's a Reigate and Banstead plate.

Not entirely clear how they can tell (presumably they're a local), but at least I now know the whereabouts of yet another obscure local authority area. :P

I would have thought Reigate and Banstead to be one of the better known LA's being so near M25

still a prize pillock rubbernecking annoys me and filming it is a big No NO in my mind if he loses his badge over it I will be  not

Depends where you are - only driven on the M25 once, and that must have been 15 years ago :-s

But I'd imagine that unless you're relatively locals it's relatively obscure - to taxi anoraks it's certainly not as high profile as the big cities, or even the likes of Sefton or Rossendale, which I suspect the average member of the public up here wouldn't have a scooby about.

Indeed, everyone rubberknecks to a degree, but filming the thing is just asking for trouble [-X

I never, ever, rubberneck. If there is an accident on the other carriageway, there is a high risk of an accident on your carriageway. Due to rubbernecking.hands firmly on the wheel, concentrating on the road ahead, because the traffic ahead will slow down.

As a grumpy old git, I do frequently wish the smartphone/ cameraphone had never been invented. Every single incident, however minor, must be filmed for posterity. You go to a restaurant and all you get is people taking pictures of food. At the football, people are filming it, instead of watching it, you go to a gig, and there’s some twit in front of you filming it. Why? The sound will be [edited by admin], the pictures will be blurry, put it away, and enjoy your life in real time! Last year I went to see “The The” and Matt Johnson the main man, had someone thrown out, because he wouldn’t stop filming it. Rant over.

Oh, and that driver, who doesn’t drive a taxi, could lose his livelihood. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh out loud    at his crass stupidity.

Just north of Gatwick, and Mrs Sx use to work there.

Got a couple of large PH firms who pre Uber use to act like Uber by abusing cross border hiring, thankfully now those firms have lost loads of drivers to Uber.
