Taxi drivers are 'racing each other' on accident-hit Burton streets - claim

Other drivers are reportedly driving at double the 30mph limit

Taxi drivers are "racing each other" on the streets of an accident-hit area of Burton, it has been claimed.

Community leaders in Brizlincote fear children are being put at risk by reckless driving on their streets.

They say speed humps are being completely ignored as motorists drive at double 30mph speed limits.

Parish councillor Bob Bidgood said: "It has been reported that taxi drivers are racing each other, along with other cars speeding more than double the speed limit, which is 30mph.

"The roads which people mostly speed on are Violet Way and Beaufort Road, there is a school around the corner from Violet Way.

"Sometimes when I am driving down, I notice school kids not paying attention and it can only take one inconsiderate driver to cause some serious damage.

"There are speed humps on Beaufort Road, which were put in last year, and unfortunately people are ignoring them and still driving fast.

"There are serious concerns. Even though there have been a lot of accidents, including cars leaving the road completely, thankfully no-one has been seriously hurt and we intend to keep it that way."

The Tower Group Speedwatch Team has been active on the main Brizlincote through-routes during the summer.

And the group has found the average speed of cars passing through is nearly 40mph.

At the time of publication, a parish council meeting was due to be held tonight, October 17, at Violet Way Academy school at 7pm.

At the meeting, councillors were set to be discuss possible solutions to their ward's speeding problems.

Parish clerk Barbera Roe said: "We are in the initial stages of the traffic-calming measures and its something that needs to be looked into as soon as possible.

"The issue has been put on the agenda for the next parish council meeting, we have two guest speakers who will be addressing the situation among other agendas.

"We welcome ideas from the public and we can assure you we will do our best to address them and take on board the suggestions we receive"

Members of the public are urges to attend tonight's meeting, but there will be no public question-and-answer session.

Suspect 'racing' at twice the speed limit more likely to mean a couple of taxis together doing about 40mph.

Oh yes the number of times I have been doing 20 MPH or less and had an angry pedestrian accuse me of speeding because they weren't paying attention and I made them jump when I had to slam my brakes on as they walked across the road without looking

People always assume because it is a taxi it must be going too fast
