I am now hack after starting off as PH and would certanaly recomend it.

My experiance of PH firms is that they think the drivers work for them, when in fact it is the other way round.... This attitude prevails because the drivers allow it to.

Example, the firm I was working for did airports for ridiculasly low fares, most of my fellow drivers complained about this, but did them anyway as they were scared of losing their jobs.

I explained to the ph firm owner, that I would not do Airports and if he didn't like it, I would take my £150 per week and give it to another PH firm after all PH firms are ten a penny and drivers are in short supply.

He had to accept what I was saying. I never did any airports.

If the system's hi-tech you should be able to go in and see where you were plotted and when the job's were dispatched. the old excuse to cover feeding is "well he had a no job so he went back first on the plot". which happens everywhere at some time or other.
If a hack is busy all the time give it a go, you can always switch back again.
If you were on the hack would you also be on a system? so when it's quiet you cover private work?

As regards account work you wanna try here! we get £1 pm and thats it, sometimes you can lose £7-8 on a local job because of the cut the company makes. Just dont cover them!
But if you dont, you wont get the decent stuff because you dont scratch their back!
Play them at their own game, go and get a dozen cream cakes one afternoon and stick em in the base room for the girls, tell em a customer gave them to you and you thought you'd share them. see what happens.
I never used to cover account work but sometimes when its quiet you have to, to get the cash at the end of the week.
On accounts, where it's a longish job i clock it as though it's cash then work it back to miles so i get the same price.
Best thing is, get yourself on the "family channel" do some creeping etc (cream cakes is a start) do you bring staff in free or do they pay? try not charging one or two of em see what happens.
Dont get me wrong, i hate feeding and having to creep, but needs must sometimes!

Why not try and get a new car, which will bring your PH expenditure down.

But if you think you can earn more in a taxi, then go and work in a taxi. You are not a charity.

used to have the same probs as you m8 when i worked for the last ass of a company.

4 guys on a shift ( incl the boss !! ).

the controller had been going out with the boss the year before but broke up...but you know the scene dont ya  .

any airport / out of town big runs,he got called on his moblie(no over the radio) ....the same applys to some of the other ass lickers....then u say to ur self...i wonder where so an so is....havent seen him for over an hour

this happened on a daily basis...then and other guys were giving out there OWN personal mobile number to punters to phone em direct...i went...SOD THIS !.
got my OWN new superb / plate ( coming tomorrow ) hands free mobile for car...done all my own advertising / promotion stuff and going it alone.
I WILL make more cash alone than with another rip off p/h company.
i was paying around £170 per wk.
car/radio inscurance /tax.
i had to service it / tyre it.

was either that or a was gonna do some serious friggin head bashin [-X
i know...its not worth losing my badge/plate over....thats why i left.

same old story and believe me its a nationwide issue, not just down in your neck of the woods.
The private taxi hire industry is full of petty folk, be it management, controllers, radio operators etc etc. The slinging of jobs is so widespread that i thank my lucky stars i get any work at all. Every private hire base has its favourites, or some bloke whos banging the controller and gets a few decent jobs handed in to him from time to time, there is always something going on. After a few years in the trade , and having enough experience now, i tell the base to f,off at weekends as i can happily make twice what the base can make me via the radio, i just pirate and make a load of readies. The base can feed as many jobs as it likes to its favourite drivers, i never rely on them now anyway. Just pick up my own regulars who ihave given my mobile numbers to, (ex company punters ) lolol,,,and sit by the various pubs / clubs/ and pick and choose the jobs i want, at double the price.
Any one starting out in private hire, remeber this, its a dirty unfair world out there, those playing by the rules get crushed,,,good luck.

VERY INTERESTING,
PH OR HACK THAT IS THE QUESTION ?
IN BRIGHTON IF YOU RENT A HACK YOU GET IT FOR A 12 HOUR SHIFT, 6 DAYS/NIGHTS PER WEEK, PICK IT UP AND TAKE IT BACK TO THE OWNER. IF YOU RENT A PH YOU GET IT 24/7. SOME GUYS THINK THE PH IS WORTH IT, NO PRIVATE CAR TO PAY FOR NO MAINTANANCE, INSURANCE, RESPONSIBILITY. THE COST OF A 24/7 PH IS A BIT CHEAPER THAN A 6 SHIFT NIGHT HACK. AS FAR AS PH COMPANYS GO,WE HAVE TWO, ONE WORKS WITH THE DRIVERS, ONE TELLS THE DRIVERS, THEY HAVE A CHOICE!
AS FAR AS BACK DOOR WORK, THE COMPANY I WORK ON REQUESTS A SMART DRESS CODE AND CLEAN CAR POLICY, THOSE THAT DRESS SMART GET A BIT MORE WORK, WHICH I THINK IS REASONABLE, AS I WOULD NOT WANT WORZAL GUMAGE TAKING ME TO THE AIRPORT, WOULD YOU?

I would go for a Taxi.

But then I would say that.

No sleep safe in your bed my son, Worzal Gumage works for a small but well known PH Company in York, I know the bloke well,He should have my forum name, would be ideal for him [Stinky Pete] previous to him being a PH, He tells everyone of his daring Special Service exploits with the SAS in Vietnam, his multiple heavy haulage container trucks which haul over Europe, his team of vans which deliver day and night to all areas, many a night in the office he has the phone ringing [mobile] listen in we hear no problems, how much, oh just send me the bill for 5 grand, I'll sort it out

This charactor comes to work in the same gear he goes out in, give the bloke some due he does get the birds so its off to the opera he goes, I quized him on military service, I being ex military of that era, wots your army number then I said, can't give it top secret, bollocks I said you have to give name rank and number, this bloke lives in dreamland and also he can't pay his radio rent, very often over the PH pnone a call comes in, don't send Wurzal for the pick up, he stinks, he tries to chat me up, etc etc

So don't be afraid Worzal lives in our area, but you also may have a carbon copy as well.
regards
