Taxi driver arrested for hurling homophobic abuse at traffic warden

https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/d ... ic-3527282

He has been in court

An angry taxi driver used homophobic language towards a traffic warden and a PCSO after receiving a parking ticket in Derby.

Naveed Younis shouted and swore when he was given a ticket when his Fiat Scudo was seen parked on double-yellow lines in Normanton.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court heard how he tried to hand the ticket back to the traffic enforcement officer and used homophobic language, before driving off and then returning to the scene.

Police officers had arrived by this point and the 37 year old was arrested.

Magistrates have now punished him with a £233 fine.

Emma Heath-Tilford, prosecuting, told the court the incident took place in Normanton on July 30.

She said a traffic warden and a police community support officer were carrying out a "specific parking operation" and spotted the defendant's car parked on double-yellow lines.

She said: "A parking ticket was issued to a black Fiat Scudo taxi. They witnessed the male (the defendant) come out of a nearby shop.

"The male got in the vehicle, sees the ticket in place on the windscreen and gets out of the vehicle.

"He said 'you can't f****** do this' and tried to hand the ticket back. He was told it wouldn't be taken back."

The court heard how he went on to use homophobic language. He drove off and returned to the scene a short time after.

When he was arrested, he said to officers: "I can't believe all this for a parking ticket."

Younis, who had no defence solicitor in court, was asked if he would like to address the magistrate bench directly.

Speaking to the magistrates, he said: "I want to apologise. I am really sorry, I was angry and I didn't know what I was saying.

"I was being stupid and I do apologise."

Younis, of Elvaston Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to using threatening/abusive words/behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

As well as the £233 fine, magistrates ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge. This took his total to pay to £350.

In passing the sentence, the chair of the magistrate bench said: "You pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

"We have listened to the facts of the case. It was a prolonged incident. You were abusive to two people just doing their job and police had to be called.

"So what we are going to do today is impose a financial penalty."

I wonder what this homophobic language was, and why the driver used it?

Never going to win an on street argument with the above.

Get in the car and drive away. Then appeal.
