Two men have died following a horror car crash in Greater Manchester which involved a taxi, police have confirmed.

The men, one believed to be in his 30s and another in his 40s, died after the Renault Megane they were in collided with a Mitsubishi Shogun at 6.55am today.

The driver of the Mitsubishi - a man in his 60s - was taken to hospital with serious injuries but is now in a stable condition, Manchester Evening News reports.

Bolton Road in Pendlebury, Salford, is cordoned off while detectives investigate the crash. Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made, Greater Manchester Police said.

An eyewitness at the scene told the Manchester Evening News this morning: "There were two smashed up cars in the road, one of them was a taxi. "There was an ambulance there and lots of police vehicles."

PC Karl Horner, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is an absolutely tragic incident, in which two people have very sadly lost their lives. "Our thoughts are with their families at this unimaginably distressing and difficult time.

"Our thoughts also remain with the man who is receiving treatment in hospital – we hope he makes a recovery as soon as is possible. "We have specially trained officers supporting those family members who have been affected.

"The investigation will be led by GMP’s Serious Investigation Unit, who specialise in investigating devastating incidents like this one.

"We hope that we can provide a measure of comfort to the distraught family members, by meticulously investigating the circumstances that led to two people losing their lives this morning."

Police have cordoned off the road from the Newtown Post Office to The Social Club in Pendlebury. Two smashed cars, including a taxi, are still in the road, say eyewitnesses at the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or motorists who drove by who have dash cam footage to assist in their investigation.

Anyone with information should contact GMP’s Serious Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 923 of 12/07/20 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Looks like the two vehicles turned into one another as they have hit each other at an angle. Judging by the amount of damage it wasn't high speed but probably the angle meant the chassis couldn't absorb the impact.

very sad

bbc has same pic
