Devon 'Dark Knight' bomb hoaxer jailed for malicious campaign against Exeter taxi firm

A bomb hoaxer who called himself The Dark Knight has been jailed after carrying out a bizarre two-month campaign of hate.

Trevor Hannaford called police to say he had planted a bomb in a taxi in Exeter and ended one call by saying ‘tick tock, tick tock’.

The main target for his jealous hatred was a taxi driver who had started a relationship with his ex-partner, but he also made threats to two prisons.

He threatened staff at Exeter Jail and told them he was going to damage the Governor’s car. He called Bullingdon Prison in Oxfordshire using the name The Dark Knight and said he was in the staff car park with a gun and a German Shepherd dog.

Hannaford bombarded a taxi firm in Exeter which had employed his ex’s new partner with 244 nuisance calls, some claiming to have planted bombs.

The Need-a-Cab firm had recently merged with another company and he rang up claiming to be their new boss and saying the entire staff had been sacked.

Hannaford, aged 40, of Myrtle Road, Exeter, admitted making a bomb hoax, four of making offensive or nuisance communications, and one of threatening criminal damage.

He was jailed for a year by Judge Timothy Rose at Exeter Crown Court.

The judge told him: ”You unleashed a wave of malicious and disturbing phone calls and caused considerable disturbance and annoyance.

“You made three calls to the police about putting an alleged bomb in the car of someone that you had a disagreement with. Although it did not take too long for the police to realise it was a hoax, calls of that nature are deeply disturbing.”

Miss Holly Rust, prosecuting, said Hannaford called 999 on May 5 this year and said he had planted a bomb in a car belonging to Carl Turner, who was in a relationship with his ex-partner.
