A shocked taxi driver was left with glass embedded in his eye after a yob launched a pumpkin at his vehicle as it drove under a bridge on the Silk Road.

The cabbie, who works for Macclesfield’s Silvertown Taxis, was travelling along the dual carriageway on Sunday morning, November 1, at 5am when the heavy fruit shattered his windscreen.

He slammed on the brakes and swerved across the road but managed to avoid crashing into the central reservation.

His first thought was that someone had jumped off the bridge but then realised he had been the victim of a mindless and highly dangerous prank.

Police have appealed for witnesses and say another similar incident was reported at the same location 30 minutes later.

Bilal Hamid, 42, owner of Silvertown, said: “He was very shaken when he came back to the office.

“It is very upsetting and makes you realise how vulnerable we are when someone does something so immature as that. I feel quite wounded for my drivers.

“If anyone knows who it was, the right thing to do is to tell the police to prevent something more serious happening.

“If it was young kids their parents need to rein them in. This was dangerous behaviour and could have been a lot worse.”

The incident happened as the taxi passed under the bridge near AstraZeneca and it is thought the yobs took pumpkins from Halloween displays at nearby homes.

Damage to the vehicle is estimated at £300 while the shattered windscreen glass was on the passenger side and largely missed the driver.

But some still lodged in his eye and needed removing in hospital.

And there were no other cars around at the time meaning fortunately the incident resulted in as little harm as possible.

But Bilal says extra security is needed at the bridge to prevent a more serious repeat.

He said: “The bridge needs some sort of fence or cage surrounding it.

“There needs to be a long term solution. Especially in the dark we are quite vulnerable.”

Police confirmed they are investigating what happened and are treating it as criminal damage. Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting reference number IML 841488 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Location: Stamford Britains prettiest town till SKDC ruined it
he could have lost his sight in one eye if it had lodged awkwardly very lucky

I doubt the yobs who threw the pumpkin even thought about the consequences
