Thousands of taxi drivers in Liverpool are to be offered grants of up to £210 to help them deal with coronavirus restrictions.

The city has 3,886 licensed drivers, who have been "hit hard" by the decline of the hospitality industry in recent months, Liverpool City Council said.

As a result, the council has approved funds of £663,400 for the grants.

One driver, who asked to remain anonymous, said he would refuse the amount offered, as it was "an insult".

Since 14 October, the city has been in tier three, which means pubs must shut unless they serve substantial meals.

The grants will see Hackney cab and private hire vehicle drivers given the £40 cost of their driver badge, plus a further £170 for their vehicle plate if they own the cab, a council spokesman said.

Many I know who have not covered their fixed costs from the beginning of the pandemic would snap their hand off if offered £210.

Tell the ingrate to take the money and donate it to charity.

The rest of the article puts the driver's point in some sort of context. Indeed, when I saw the figures (£170 for plate, £40 for badge) I was kind of guessing it might be something to do with that:

Can see entirely what the driver's getting at here. Fine if you're a fleet owner or owner-driver. But if you're on a collar/settle you're only getting £40

The equivalent of the licence extension?

Mine's is worth about £13 for the badge, maybe £40 for the plate.

But it's an extension on renewals, so because I apply for the three year licences, I won't benefit until the extension kicks in towards 2024

Council say any licence in issue at lockdown will be given a three month extension on renewal.

So if that rule still applies in a couple of years, those renewing just before lockdown won't get the benefit of their extension until 2026

I suspect the reason they're doing it that way will be to maintain current revenues, and they'll just put the fees up in a year or two to cover the shortfall

But we've got one-year options on both plates and badges, so proportionately, a three-month extension on a one-year licence will obviously be of much more benefit than on the three-year options.

Obviously I'd have preferred it if they'd automatically extended current licences by three months.

According to TaxiPoint website the good folks of Barnsley are in for a £500 grant each.
