Not much to see here, but you wonder if it's the best time for stuff like this, even if implementation would be a long way down the line.

So while many in the trade just having to carry on as normal, often it seems that council licensing functions have ceased operating, particularly when it justifies sitting at home all day in their jim-jams, and on full salary.

On the other hand, in cases like this it's as if nothing's happened during 2020

Council to consider making CCTV in taxi cabs compulsory

The consultation will last until March

A Lincolnshire council are consulting on whether to make CCTV in all taxi and private hire cars mandatory.

East Lindsey District Council are consulting on whether CCTV in taxis should be made compulsory, in a bid to provide a 'safer environment' for both the driver and passengers.

The council say the benefits of CCTV include deterring and preventing crime, reducing the fear of crime, assisting the police in investigating incidents and helping insurance companies investigating motor vehicle accidents.

The consultation is taking place between December 3, 2020 and March 5, 2021 and asks whether the council should move away from the current voluntary system and instead consider requiring all taxi and private hire vehicles to install CCTV.

The council’s portfolio holder for finance, councillor Richard Fry, said: “We have a number of taxi and private hire vehicles that operate within the district and it is important that everybody’s safety is paramount, and sometimes CCTV can be a tool which is used as part of this.

"The consultation is open until March and we would urge residents and businesses alike to have their say.”

The consultation can be completed online by visiting the website here.

Paper copies can be requested by calling 01507 601111.

When replying to this consultation, it is important to note that there is no current evidence of a prevalence of crimes being committed within taxis and private hire vehicles licensed with this Authority. Also, is likely that a high standard and robust CCTV system could cost between £500 and £1,000 per vehicle.

Although to be fair, the council just seems to be following the DfT guidance to review the need for CCTV in their area, although I'm not sure to what extent the DfT stuff requires a formal consultation process etc.

Particularly as the passage above gives the distinct impression that the council itself doesn't think CCTV is a pressing necessity. But obviously they think a consultation is quite important, even at this time :?

I suspect this has been in the pipeline for a while, and it was delayed by covid.

Thing is, in terms of costs, if they get the right system many of our insurers will offer a discount on premiums.

Which could in time cover the costs.

I doubt there is that much need but this area does include Skegness which attracts a lot of dodgy families and crime during the summer months.
